Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest match preview

Nottingham Forest are winless in 24 visits to Anfield, dating back to a League Cup tie in 1978, but can they complete a first league-double over Liverpool since 1962/63?

Well, given how both teams are playing right no, this seems unlikely.

On Monday night, the Reds enjoyed a first away league victory of the season against a team below them, smashing Leeds United 6-1.

Coady Gakpo broke the deadlock, Mohammed Salah and Diogo Jota bagged braces and then Darwin Núñez completed the rout.

This ended a run of four games without a victory for Jürgen Klopp’s team who remain eighth, nine points adrift the final Champions League spot.

Can Liverpool start to build momentum as they seek to climb back into the European spots?

The Reds are now without a victory in ten, losing each of the last three, following last Sunday’s 2-0 reverse at the hands of Manchester United.

After this, Forest’s remaining fixtures are: Brighton (H), Brentford (A), Southampton (H), Chelsea (A), Arsenal (H) and Crystal Palace (A).

The Southampton game aside, Steve Cooper’s team don’t seem likely to yield very many points from that run in, with an immediate return to the Championship looking increasingly likely.

Anything other than a resounding Liverpool victory would be a major surprise at Anfield, even if Forest did win the reverse fixture in October.

Liverpool team news

Despite scoring off the bench on Monday night, Darwin Núñez could remain a substitute, given that starters Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo were all also on target.

Fellow forward Luis Díaz also came on against Leeds, his first appearance since 9 October due to injury.

In general, Jürgen Klopp could name an unchanged line-up, with Curtis Jones getting the nod over Thiago in midfield.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, van Dijk, Konaté, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Jones; Salah, Gakpo, Jota.

Nottingham Forest team news

Steve Cooper has switched to a back five for Forest’s last two games, but this has yielded little success.

Taiwo Awoniyi, who was the only scorer in the reverse fixture, will continue to lead the line, with Chris Wood injured.

Goalkeeper Keylor Navas’ only previous appearance against Liverpool came in the 2018 Champions League Final, which his Real Madrid team won 3-1 in Kyiv; slightly different scenario now.

Predicted XI (5-3-2): Navas; Williams, Felipe, McKenna, Niakhaté, Lodi; Freuler, Danilo, Gibbs-White; Johnson, Awoniyi.
