Arsenal legend reveals role in Declan Rice transfer

A former Arsenal player tried to help the Gunners sign Declan Rice.

Arsenal confirmed the signing of England midfielder Declan Rice from West Ham for £100m plus £5m in add-ons on July 15.

Rice signed a five-year contract with Arsenal in a deal which has the option of a further year.

On moving to the Emirates, the former West Ham skipper said: “I’ve been looking at Arsenal over the last couple of seasons and the trajectory they’ve been on.

“Not last season but the season before, they [only] finished fifth, but you could see the style of play Mikel was implementing. Last season was an outstanding season, blowing pretty much every team out of the water with the exception of Manchester City.”

Rice will wear the no.41 shirt at Arsenal and is sure to be a major player for them in 2023/24.

Now, Ian Wright has revealed he was ‘tapping up’ Rice before a deal was done:

“I don’t work for the club, I’m an Arsenal fan. I said, ‘Look at you and Saka, how cool you lot look together’. It’s just excitement.”
