Manchester United vs Crystal Palace match preview

The Manchester United crisis has been put on hold for now, but they’re only ever one defeat away from oblivion.

On Saturday night, the Red Devils enjoyed a much-needed victory, beating Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor, courtesy of Bruno Fernandes’ stunning volley in first half stoppage time.

Before this, Man United had conceded 3+ in three successive matches for the first time since 1978, beaten by Arsenal, Brighton and then Bayern Munich.

Having won three and lost three, Erik ten Hag’s team are still down in ninth place, but the pressure has been slightly eased, for now anyway.

Of course, Manchester United are the Carabao Cup holders, commencing the defence of their trophy here, having beaten Newcastle United 2-0 at Wembley back in February.

Only once before have the Red Devils retained the League Cup, this in 2010, falling at the first hurdle three times subsequently, this happening in 2014, 2018 and 2021.

The Eagles have actually won two of their last four visits to the Theatre of Dreams, with the traveling contingent dreaming of a repeat League Cup victory that their side enjoyed back in 2011.

This time round, Palace came from 2-0 down to beat Plymouth Argyle in the second round, with Odsonne Édouard halving the deficit at Home Park, before Jean-Philippe Mateta bagged a 22 minute hat-trick.

In the Premier League meantime, it’s just one win in five for Roy Hodgson’s side, with Saturday’s uneventful goalless draw with Fulham leaving them tenth, just one point and one place below their hosts.

Will Manchester United be too strong at Old Trafford, or can Crystal Palace upset the odds?

Manchester United team news

The hosts are without Lisandro Martínez, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Tyrell Malacia, Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad due to injury, while Jadon Sancho and Antony are also unavailable.

Sergio Reguilón also hobbled off towards the end of Saturday’s win, which would leave Erik ten Hag very short of defensive options.

In better news, Raphaël Varane made his return from injury off the bench at Turf Moor, while there was a debut for Sofyan Amrabat, also introduced as a late substitute.

Here, new goalkeeper Altay Bayındır will make his debut, while there’s also likely to be starts for Donny van de Beek, Alejandro Garnacho, Facundo Pellistri and Anthony Martial.

Predicted XI: (4-3-3): Bayındır; Dalot, Lindelöf, Evans, Reguilón; Amrabat, McTominay, Eriksen; Garnacho, Pellistri, Martial.

Crystal Palace team news

The headline from the Crystal Palace team is likely to be a debut for Dean Henderson who, after being an unused substitute for their last two games, will be donning the gloves against the team he’s just left.

Rob Holding is also likely to debut at centre-back, alongside Chris Richards.

In the previous round, Jean-Philippe Mateta became the first Frenchman to score a League Cup hat-trick for two decades, so he could lead the line, rotated in for Odsonne Édouard.

Jefferson Lerma, Naouirou Ahamada, Michael Olise and summer signing Matheus França are all out injured.

Predicted XI (4-5-1): Henderson; Clyne, Holding, Richards, Mitchell; Riedewald, Doucouré, Schlupp, Ayew, Eze; Mateta.
