Norway vs Philippines match preview

Norway have been frankly miserable at this summer’s World Cup, so can they salvage their campaign with a victory in Auckland?

On the tournament’s opening night, the Grasshoppers were beaten 1-0 by co-hosts New Zealand, putting in an in cohesive and lacklustre display, rarely threatening the Football Ferns’ goal.

Five days later, Norway were involved in a leading contender for most boring game of the tournament, playing out an uneventful goalless draw with Switzerland at Waikato Stadium.

Since then, there’s been plenty of talk that the Norwegian player do not see eye-to-eye with manager Hege Riise, so this has all the hallmarks of a juggernaut crashing out early, doesn’t it?

Having gone out in group phase of last summer’s Euros, the 1995 World Champions could fall at the first hurdle at back-to-back major tournaments for the very first time.

A win here though would almost certainly see Norway progress, possibly dependent on the other result simultaneously, so can Riise’s team come together and claim the result they need?

Earlier this week, Sarina Bolden’s header saw her team beat New Zealand 1-0 in Wellington, becoming the first Philippines player to score at a World Cup, leading her team to their maiden World Cup victory.

Goalkeeper Olivia Davies-McDaniel was player of the match though, pulling off four saves, the pick of the bunch came in the 92nd minute.

So, having narrowly lost 2-0 to Switzerland in their opener, Alen Stajcic’s side have three points on the board, knowing just a draw here could take them through against the odds.

Should the Filipinas prevail in Auckland, they would be guaranteed a place in the round of 16.

Will either side be celebrating come full time at Eden Park?

Norway team news

Hege Riise has seemingly fallen out with star winger Caroline Graham Hansen, who was left on the bench against Switzerland, coming on for half an hour, making her frustrations known after the game.

To make matters worse, Norway’s other star attacker Ada Hegerberg pulled out literally seconds before kick off in Hamilton, due to a groin injury, with Sophie Román Haug deputising.

It remains unclear of either Graham Hansen or Hegerberg will be available for this one.

Meanwhile, both Frida Maanum and Guro Reiten continue to be deployed out of position so, if Norway are eliminated here, Riise will surely be sacked not long after,.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Mikalsen; Bjelde, Harviken, Mjelde, Hansen; Bøe Risa, Reiten, Graham Hansen, Maanum, Blakstad; Hegerberg.

Philippines teams news

Just one of this squad were born in the Philippines; 18 of the 23 were both in the United States.

This includes the two heroes from the win over New Zealand, goalkeeper Olivia Davies-McDaniel and goal-scorer Sarina Bolden.

Alen Stajcic could name an unchanged line-up, hoping to pull off another shock win.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Davies-McDaniel; Cowart, Long, Beard; Barker, Quezada-Keča, Sawicki, Eggesvik, Harrison; Guillou, Bolden.
