Brentford vs Aston Villa match preview

Will Aston Villa’s remarkable resurgence continue?

Last weekend, everybody sat up and took notice as the Claret and Blue Army demolished Newcastle 3-0 at Villa Park.

Jacob Ramsey fired home an early opener, before in-form Ollie Watkins scored twice.

This actually made it five successive victories for Villa, who are unbeaten in eight Premier League fixtures, winning seven of them.

So, despite being 17th when Unai Emery arrived in November, they Villans are now sitting pretty in sixth, just six points below Newcastle who occupy the last Champions League spot.

So, will Aston Villa take another step towards qualifying for Europe for the first time since 2010?

The Bees are now winless in five and have lost three on the spin after last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at Molineux against Wolves.

As a result, Thomas Frank’s team have slipped down to ninth, which would still represent the club’s highest top-flight finish since 1938.

Earlier this season, Aston Villa smashed Brentford 4-0, ending their eight-match winless streak against the Bees, dating back to 1953.

Given the form of both, an away win seems likely at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Brentford team news

Club captain Pontus Jansson has played his last game for Brentford; he’ll miss the rest of the season due to injury before joining Malmö in the summer.

Without him, Thomas Frank is likely to stick with the back four deployed in Wolverhampton a week ago.

Forward Kevin Schade had struggled for minutes after arriving from Freiburg in January, but is now set for his third successive start.

Ivan Toney would miss Brentford’s next two games, Chelsea (A) and Forest (H) if booked here.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Raya; Hickey, Pinnock, Mee, Henry; Nørgaard, Jensen, Dasilva; Mbuemo, Schade, Toney.

Aston Villa team news

After five wins on the bounce, Unai Emery is set to deploy an unchanged line-up.

Ollie Waktins will face his former club, having scored in four Premier League games on the spin, netting 11 times in his last 12 appearances.

Leander Dendoncker will continue to anchor midfield, alongside Douglas Luiz, with Boubacar Kamara out injured.

At right-back, Ashley Young will make his 417th appearance in the top division of English football, which is 137 more than Brentford.

Diego Carlos has been on the bench for Villa’s last six games, hoping to feature for the first time since rupturing his ACL in August.

Predicted XI (4-5-1): Martínez; Young, Konsa, Mings, Moreno; Douglas Luiz, Dendoncker, McGinn, Buendía, Ramsey; Watkins.
