Betting prediction: Sevilla 2-1 Borussia Dortmund

It’s all going well for Sevilla in La Liga at the minute, as the Andalusian-side has won five straight in the league and looks to be enjoying life back in the top four. As for Borussia Dortmund, their topsy-turvy Bundesliga form has gone from one frustrating performance after the next. An intriguing match, but on current form, Sevilla should be able to see off the Ruhr valley outfit.

Sevilla vs Borussia Dortmund: Recommended bets

Result/Both Teams to Score: Sevilla – Yes

There is too much quality in both teams (which is the usual situation in the knockout stages of the Champions League) on the pitch for this to end 0-0, but it still should prove to be a relatively even match. Dortmund is struggling this season, but when they’re on song, they’re one of the most dangerous attacking sides in Europe. Sevilla, however, has a strong European pedigree built on being a side that knows how to negotiate the rounds past the group stage. Their current domestic form should see them come on top, but Dortmund should still find a goal.

To Score Anytime: Alejandro Gómez

It is so easy to look at some of the players on offer at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán on Wednesday and think Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho, or Youssef En-Nesyri would find their way on the scoresheet. Odds-are that they likely will, but they’re certainly expected to; especially Haaland and En-Nesyri. Alejandro Gomez is a good and maybe unexpected shout to do the same. Experienced, and a handful to deal with in the final third, his attacking intelligence could find him on the end of one or two key chances that he could tuck away.

Sevilla vs Borussia Dortmund: Match preview

The stories so often mentioned coming out of La Liga this season revolves around the usual suspects. Atlético Madrid’s dominance surely captures most of the headlines, with Diego Simeone’s men surrendering just thirteen goals in 21-matches along the way. What will come of Barcelona and Real Madrid if neither can find a good enough run to regain top spot in Spain offers up a further discussion as well. But very quietly Sevilla has put together a two-month run of form that has been one of the best in Europe’s top-five leagues.

Nine wins from their last twelve La Liga matches are impressive; even more so when they have tasted defeat just once, succumbing to none other than Atléti on a visit to the capital while being shut out in the process. A clubs’ Domestic form is not Europe with all its potential speed bumps along the way, but the current platform seen under Julen Lopetegui is noteworthy indeed. So too have the goal-scoring exploits of Moroccan international Youssef El-Nesyri. With eight goals in his last seven La Liga appearances, his thirteen goals in twenty-two league fixtures are good enough for joint-third in Spain’s top flight. Additionally, he has bagged four goals in six in the Champions League and is a considerable tactical threat for Dortmund must tangle with.

Though not under the command of Unai Emery (who is currently having his own successful season at Villareal), Sevilla is still a side that knows how to get results. Though thrashed 4-0 by Chelsea on matchday five in the Champions League group stage, the Andalusian outfit posted a 4-1-1 record and finished second just one point behind the Blues. But their level of performances since that defeat has been nothing short of superb. Los Nervionenses have gone on to record a 16-2-2 record in all competitions since that home loss to Chelsea in December, with Real Madrid being the only other side apart from their capital rivals to earn the privilege of sending Sevilla home in defeat. At current, they are one of the most consistent sides on the continent, and much like their league performances could quietly position themselves with an outside chance to push for Champions League honors.

An uptick in performances is a requirement for inconsistent Borussia Dortmund

News breaking that highly touted and respected Borussia Mönchengladbach manager Marco Rose is set to join Borussia Dortmund in the summer is a bright spot for the Die Schwarzgelben faithful during a season of frustration. With just one win in their last six Bundesliga fixtures – a 3-1 win against FC Augsburg – the post-Lucien Favre era in the Ruhr valley has hardly been something to write home about.

Though interim boss Edin Terzić is out of his depth despite the pedigree of managers he has coached under during his young career, the Menden-native and former Dortmund assistant should not shoulder the lion’s share of the blame for the hoodoo currently resting comfortably over Signal Iduna Park. Individual mistakes have continued to plague and undermine what is a very gifted Dortmund team that is brimming with ability in all areas of the pitch. The young attacking threats posed by Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho, and Giovanni Reyna is the stuff romantic dreams are made of, while Marco Reus, Thorgan Hazard, Raphaël Guerreiro, Julian Brandt, Axel Witsel, Jude Bellingham, Mats Hummels, and others compromise what is – on paper – one of the strongest squads in all of Europe. But strength on paper does not guarantee success, especially when your best and brightest struggle to perform consistently.

The data behind Dortmund’s season paints a picture that has not been seen when results have been tallied, however. Performing at a near-even pace (41 goals scored) to their xG (40.59), Dortmund remains a constant goal threat even though they have been inconsistent regarding their ability to finish. But it has been the torrid nature of their defensive displays that have – once again – led them to self-inflicted wounds all of 2020-21. With an xGA of 23.53, their 31 goals allowed gifts them the second-worst expected difference in the Bundesliga.

Despite their struggles on the domestic front, Dortmund topped a deceptively tricky group compromised of SS Lazio, Club Brugge, and Zenit St.Petersburg. Being comprehensively beaten on matchday one 3-1 by the Rome-based outfit, Dortmund bounced back to go undefeated in the subsequent five matches but still failed to be as dominant as expected. Against a Sevilla side that is well and truly capable to trip them out and send them crashing out at the first hurdle, action stations will be required if Die Schwarzgelben is to produce a European campaign befitting of their station.

Sevilla team news vs Borussia Dortmund

Sevilla could be in with some undesired squad selection issues when they welcome Borussia Dortmund to Spain. Boss Julen Lopetegui could be without Jesus Navas, Lucas Ocampos, Oscar Rodriguez, and Marcos Acuna.

Should all of Sevilla’s first-choice options not be available, Papu Gomez’s tactical flexibility could net him a Champions League start for his new club, while Kerim Rekik and Aleix Vidal could also deputize on either side of the back four.

Borussia Dortmund team news vs Sevilla

Interim chief Edin Terzić confirmed that he will be without Thorgan Hazard, Roman Bürki, Dan-Axel Zagadou, and Lukas Piszczek for Dortmund’s trip to the south of Spain.

Marco Reus is expected to make his return to the matchday XI, while Thomas Meunier could also feature after his return from injury.

A strong XI should be expected to be fielded by Terzić, with Dortmund’s next Bundesliga fixture being a light travel day for the Rivierderby against Schalke.
