Will this finally be the season that Manchester City win the holy grail?

Last year, Pep Guardiola took a team to a Champions League Final for the first time in a decade.

The Citizens amassed 16 points in the group phase before getting past Borussia Mönchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund and then PSG in the knockout rounds.

However, they couldn’t take that last step, going down 1-0 to Chelsea at Estádio do Dragão.

Guardiola has won ten major honours as Manchester City manager but still hasn’t got his hands on the one they all really want.

Will this year be the year?

Well, the Sky Blues come into this tie in scintillating form in the Premier League.

On Saturday, Bernardo Silva got the only goal in a 1-0 victory at Leicester.

That followed back-to-back 5-0 wins over Norwich City and Arsenal which leaves Man City fourth in the table, one point behind the three leaders.

This is the 11th successive season Man City have qualified for the Champions League group phase, failing in the first two but getting through each time since then.

In fact, they’ve won 18 of their last 24 Champions League group stage games, losing just twice,

When the draw was made in İstanbul, this group was what caught a lot of people’s attention.

Paris Saint-Germain and Belgian champions Club Brugge complete a tasty looking Group A.

Man City’s two encounters with PSG will be blockbuster but, ultimately, those two are both likely to reach the round of 16.

Will the Premier League champions start with a victory at the Etihad?

Will RB Leipzig enjoy a famous win?

RB Leipzig though will be looking to upset the establishment of Group A and that’s something they’re very much used to doing.

Die Roten Bullen’s first ever top-flight season was 2016/17 and they amazingly finished second.

In total, they’ve finished second or third four times out of five, slumping down to sixth in 2018, also reaching the DFB-Pokal Finals of 2019 and 2021.

This means, Leipzig are now European regulars and this is their fourth Champions League group phase appearance.

They’ve got through the last two, including finishing second to PSG last year but eliminating Manchester United and İstanbul Başakşehir.

They’ll be hoping for a bit of Manchester-based déjà vu.

However, this season is one of transition in Saxony.

Head Coach Julian Nagelsmann has left for Bayern Munich with American Jesse Marsch his replacement.

Marsch has previously managed New York Red Bulls and Red Bull Salzburg so heaven knows how he was recruited.

In terms of players, Dayot Upamecano and Marcel Sabitzer have joined Bayern with Ibrahima Konaté, Hannes Wolf , Ademola Lookman and Alexander Sørloth all also departing

This upheaval has been reflected by RB Leipzig’s underwhelming start to the Bundesliga campaign.

On Saturday night, they were easily beaten 4-1 by Bayern Munich at Red Bull Arena so have just three points after four games, only beating Stuttgart so far.

This doesn’t bode well for this competition as the 2019/20 semi-finalists seek to reach the knockout phase once again.

Will RB Leipzig cause a huge upset in Manchester?

Pep Guardiola obviously has a plethora of talent at his disposal and rarely names an unchanged XI.

Thus, expect a bit of rotation despite this being a very tough clash.

Ederson will continue in goal with Scott Carson his current deputy due to Zack Steffen testing positive for Covid-19 whilst away with the U.S.

At the back, Kyle Walker’s pace will be vital but, on the other side, Oleksandr Zinchenko could return in place of João Cancelo.

Rúben Dias is, obviously, their number one centre-back but his partner, right now, appears to be Aymeric Laporte not John Stones.

In midfield Kevin De Bruyne will return after sitting out Saturday’s victory over Leicester.

Phil Foden was also on the bench at the King Power but is unlikely to be thrown in after injury.

Rodri and İlkay Gündoğan could join De Bruyne in midfield here but don’t be surprised if the experienced Fernandinho is recalled.

The weekend’s winning goal scorer Bernardo Silva could be back amongst the substitutes.

Out-wide, Jack Grealish will make his first ever appearance in a UEFA club competition after joining for £100 million this summer.

Gabriel Jesus and Ferran Torres could complete the attacking trip with the Brazilian wide-right.

If this is the case, Silva would be joined on the bench by Raheem Sterling and Riyāḍ Maḥrez; not bad options to have in reserve.

Will this be the first step on the road towards Saint Petersburg and the 2022 Champions League Final?

As for RB Leipzig, can Jesse Marsch come up with a masterplan that’ll upset Man City?

Captain Péter Gulácsi shipped four whilst representing Hungary against England earlier this month so will be hoping to avoid something similar against England’s champions.

His compatriot Willi Orbán will anchor a new-look defence alongside Mohamed Simakan who’s joined from Strasbourg this summer.

Left-back Angeliño didn’t make the grade at the Etihad but is a key player both defensively and going forward for this team.

In midfield, U.S. star Tyler Adams could return at the base of midfield, alongside Kevin Kampl, with Konrad Laimer joining Amadou Haidara on the bench.

Further forward, Dominik Szoboszlai joined from RB Salzburg in January but didn’t make his debut until last month due to injury.

However, the 20 year old has already left his mark, scoring twice in their only Bundesliga win so far over Stuttgart.

He’s one of a number of attacking midfield options, namely Emil Forsberg, Dani Olmo and Christopher Nkunku.

Ilaix Moriba is awaiting his debut after joining from Barcelona on deadline day.

Their big-money signing of the summer is André Silva who’s arrived having scored 29 times for Eintracht Frankfurt last season.

He’ll get the nod up front over yet another wonder-kid, Brian Brobbey, and Denmark star Yussuf Yurary Poulsen.

Will Leipzig’s talent see them leave Manchester with a result?
