Betting prediction: Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-3 Manchester City
With all the adulation that has come Marco Rose’s way, his Gladbach-side is in a real turbulent period at the minute. Coming into the Champions League knockout stage without a win in four in the Bundesliga, this is the worst time to clash with Manchester City who seems legitimately unstoppable on the domestic front. Gladbach does have a habit of turning up against bigger opposition, but you’d still bet on City blitzing them in the first leg given the comparisons of late.
Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Manchester City: Recommended bets
Winning Margin: Manchester City +2
When City are on it, they truly are on it. Though they only beat Arsenal 1-0 at the weekend, they rarely elevate their game if they don’t have to. A fully-fit and prepared City could – and probably should – pose a massive threat to Gladbach. Rose’s men do have ability in their own right, and their appearance in the Champions League is no fluke, but current domestic struggles could really bite them here.
Result/Both Teams to Score: Manchester City – Yes
Going back to the overall betting prediction, there are a lot of variables at play with this matchup. Gladbach’s best performances in recent memory were their 4-2 and 3-2 wins against both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich respectively. Die Borussen has plenty of goal-scoring potential in the team, especially through the likes of Alassane Plea, Marcus Thuram, and Lars Stindl. However, with the way City have performed at the back during their incredible run of form, coupled with their near-unmatched ability to dominate the ball and drown out any chance their opposition have to find, their footing is hard to bet against at the minute.

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Manchester City: Match preview
Things are not exactly Rose-y at Borussia Park currently for Borussia Mönchengladbach. Though Marco Rose has confirmed his departure from the club for Borussia Dortmund in the summer, the highly-touted manager – still committed to the club’s cause for the rest of the season – has the ability to keep Die Fohlen in greener pastures. But it has not come to pass in that manner of late. Despite credible results against both Dortmund and Bayern in January, Gladbach is now in the midst of a winless run in their last four (0-2-2).
It should be noted that two of their last four fixtures were draws against teams ahead of them at the minute (Union Berlin, and VfL Wolfsburg), but unexpected and perhaps inexcusable losses suffered against 1.FC Köln and 1.FSV Mainz 05 are an indication that all is not entirely well at the minute. Now nine points adrift of Eintracht Frankfurt (4th), a turn in fortunes is necessary if the club is to go into a tricky week that includes City and a trip to RB Leipzig at the weekend and not see themselves likely out of Europe and perhaps even further down the Bundesliga table.
Their Champions League campaign was an impressive one during group stage play, though. They were made to sweat on the final day after losing on matchday five and six, but getting out of a group comprised of Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Inter Milan should be lauded appropriately. In that period, Gladbach beat Shakhtar by a combined 10-0 scoreline (6-0, 4-0), accounting for the only two losses the Ukrainian side suffered. Gladbach is capable on their day, and coming through what is probably the group of death demonstrates that. The likes of Stindl, Thuram, Plea, Ramy Bensebaini, a revitalized Jonas Hofmann, and the gifted Florian Neuhaus – though linked with massive clubs around the continent – constitutes a core of players that can hurt you if you let them. Die Fohlen do have a chance to surprise, but much of that may depend on City more so than themselves.

Quadruple-chasing Manchester City must not be their own worst enemy
There really is not much more to say about Manchester City that has not already been covered through a myriad of mediums. Fifty goals scored in the Premier League this term, while only allowing fifteen through twenty-five matches, and currently sitting unbeaten in twenty-five across all competitions. Not since late November have City tasted defeat, and the last time they were blanked on the scoresheet was the Manchester derby back in mid-December. Though they have lost this term on a handful of occasions, there are some that toy with the idea of labeling them arguably one of the best sides in the history of the Premier League, rightly or wrongly.
On the cards for City down the road is a League Cup final against Tottenham, an FA cup quarterfinal against Everton, and they sit rather comfortably atop the Premier League table with a ten-point cushion on Manchester United. A quadruple is very much a possibility for Pep Guardiola and his Citizens this season, but when it comes to the Champions League, City has continuously fallen well-short of the mark since they began taking the footballing world by storm under Emirati-ownership. In their ten seasons (prior to this one) in the Champions League during the clubs’ history, City has only reached the quarterfinals or better in four of them; 2019-20, 2018-19, 2017-18, and 2015/16. It’s been five years since their only semi-final appearance, perpetrated by Manuel Pellegrini in 2015-16. It is fair to say that despite ownership, level of investment, and the current manager in charge, the fact that City has yet to lift a Champions League trophy is a failure when stacked up against what the club aspires to truly be.
Many should remember that for all his dominance of the Bundesliga during his time in Bavaria, Pep never lifted the trophy with Bayern either; a club whose singular focus is to be the most dominant side on the continent; similar to what City are truly aiming for. But his success at Barcelona will certainly be looked at fondly by the City faithful in terms of what can be possible under one of the greatest tactical minds of a generation if not two. There are some that think that even more big-time experience is needed at City if they are to truly conquer Europe. With links to interest in Lionel Messi – who could still leave Barcelona – comes with the premise that legendary Argentina could be the player with the requisite pedigree to get them over the line in the competition.
But in their hunt for the biggest trophy in European club football, City must not be their own worst enemy. For all their dominance on the domestic front, Pep Guardiola sides have been guilty of switching off when they’re the clear favorite. Despite the gulf in class when compared to Gladbach, the North Rhine-Westphalia outfit still need to be taken seriously over two legs; similar respect should be shown to them as if they were the likes of PSG, Real Madrid, or Juventus et al. With the current form they are indeed in, few would be shocked if they made their way to their first Champions League (or equivalent) final in the clubs’ history. That run has to start the right way against Gladbach.

Borussia Mönchengladbach team news vs Manchester City
No selection issues exist for Marco Rose in the run-up to Gladbach’s date with Manchester City.
Questions will however surround the nature of the approach Die Fohlen may take; either a three at the back deployment to try to nullify City, or a 4-2-3-1 and look to assert themselves more.
Manchester City team news vs Borussia Mönchengladbach
Pep Guardiola can breathe a sigh of relief as his only remaining player unavailable through injury is Nathan Aké. Other than that concern, City should be fielding their best-possible XI.
Gabriel Jesus did not start against Arsenal at the weekend, so the Brazilian international could be in-line to lead the line against Gladbach.
