Port Vale vs Sutton United match preview

Which one of these two lower-league clubs will keep their Carabao Cup adventure going into round four?

This’ll be Port Vale’s first appearance in round three for 14 years, having ousted Fleetwood Town and then Crewe Alexandra, the latter on penalties, thus far.

Meantime, in League One, Andy Crosby’s team are doing very well, having won five of nine outings, with Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Cambridge United leaving them fourth.

Given that the Valiants were promoted via the League Two play-offs the season before last, and haven’t competed in the second-tier since 2000, this is an unlikely, early promotion push.

Here though, the home side are favourites to advance, given that visitors Sutton United are one of only three League Two clubs still involved in the Carabao Cup.

Matt Gray’s team overcame Cambridge United on penalties in round one, before Aiden O’Brien’s goal at Adams Park downed Wycombe Wanderers in the second round last month.

Sutton hammered Notts County on the opening weekend of the season, before losing seven League Two fixtures on the spin, eventually stopping the rot with a 1-1 draw against Milton Keynes on Saturday.

In short, given that the visitors are rock bottom of the entire Football League, a home win seems likely at Vale Park.
