Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel casts doubt on left-back position in wake of Ben Chilwell’s injury

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel casts doubt on left-back position in wake of Ben Chilwell’s injury

Left-back doubts for Tuchel

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel spoke candidly ahead of the Blues’ clash with Watford at Vicarage Road tomorrow, casting doubt on squad depth at left-back in the wake of star man Ben Chilwell going down injured.

The German tactician spoke with the press earlier today, and quotes provided by Ben Dinnery exude concern after the England international will be out until at least the new year, and potentially longer given the extent of the damage to his ACL;

“Suddenly, if one has a longer injury like Ben, it seems like we don’t have enough. Can Marcos play eight matches every three days? Maybe not. Callum can play on the left side as a wing-back and we have some other ideas to try.”

For the moment, Chelsea has just Spanish international veteran Marcos Alonso as the only true left-sided defender for Tuchel’s preferential back three deployment. The possibility of England youth international Callum Hudson-Odoi being redeployed on the left speaks to the versatility of the Cobham academy graduate, but it is far from an ideal solution for what could potentially ail the club for a large chunk of the 2021-22 campaign.

Chelsea trio a doubt for Vicarage Road visit

England international Ben Chilwell is hardly the only injury concern for Thomas Tuchel at the minute, with the Chelsea boss having to cope with the prospect of a trio of key players missing the midweek away day.

The Blues headmaster will make a late decision regarding center midfield fulcrum Jorginho, right-back sensation Reece James, and German international forward Timo Werner according to quotes in SkySports.

The trio trained in the run-up to proceedings but all face late fitness tests to ascertain their availability, but for Tuchel it will remain business as usual;

“It will be challenging, but the good thing is it was challenging before. We don’t change our routine, we have close communication with the medical and fitness departments, and we try to predict the load and who is overloaded.

We’ll see what we need in the next games from there. Step by step. If you look too far ahead you can see this will be some tough weeks, so that’s why we focus on the details, on the next game and maybe the next two games.

It’s on the players to not only be strong in the games, but take recovery very seriously. Sleeping and taking the right food, because games are intense and we need to have a certain identity and mentality.

We are not scared to rotate. We trust the full squad, and it’s no secret you need a full squad in weeks like this.”
