Newcastle United are ready to make an audacious swoop for Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer according to reports in England, as they look to strengthen the club's frontline.

The Magpies have enjoyed a brilliant second half of the Premier League campaign, and have become the first side to stay up despite not winning any of their first 14 Premier League games.

To put that into perspective, they now have 11 wins, and with two games to go could still finish in the top half of the table. However, goalscoring has been a problem: Eddie Howe's side have managed just 40 goals all season, the 8th lowest in the division, and have been without Callum Wilson for a long stretch thanks to injury.

Calvert-Lewin in the crosshairs

As a result, the newly-minted club will certainly be in the market for forward reinforcements this summer, and, as per The Telegraph, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is atop their wishlist.

The Englishman has also struggled with injury this season, making just 13 appearances and returning 3 goals. Nonetheless, he hit double figures in the two previous seasons, and at 25 years old is just beginning to come into his prime.

Last summer, he was thought to have been on the radar of Arsenal, though they now appear more intent on signing Gabriel Jesus. As a result, it may be Newcastle that steal a march for the hitman's services.

'The Magpies have identified Calvert-Lewin as one of their priority targets this summer and have been encouraged to believe the player would like to make the move before the start of next season', the report claims.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are also expected to land Reims striker Hugo Ekitike, with the same report adding that the French teenage sensation is now 'expected to join after a move for the forward collapsed on deadline day in January when the player was reluctant to leave France so soon after breaking into the first team.'
