Marcelo out of 2nd Chelsea clash because he has to man a polling station in Madrid

Marcelo out of 2nd Chelsea clash because he has to man a polling station in Madrid

Chelsea in semi “for a reason”

Chelsea came away with a solid 1-1 draw in the Spanish capital yesterday, ahead of the second-leg of their Champions League semi-final clash with Real Madrid.

American international Christian Pulisic opened the scoring for the Blues early in the first-half, only for his strike to be cancelled out by a Karim Benzema equaliser.

Neither were able to take the initiative to win the game in the second-half, before Real manager Zinedine Zidane described Chelsea as a side that deserve to be where they are in the competition, with a draw therefore a good result.

“In the first half it was very difficult for us, but we controlled it more in the second half,” said Zidane

“They’re very quick, have good players and started very well. In the second half we had more control.  We’re still in the tie and we’re happy with the overall performance. We’re also good at playing away from home, we press high.

“They’re [Chelsea] in the semi-final for a reason, they’re a good side. The second leg will be very competitive. Militao had a great game, like all of them. They’ve given their all tonight and we’ll rest now.”

Marcelo could miss due to polling station duty

Due to the injury suffered by French international Ferland Mendy, Marcelo was picked to play in a left-wing back position for Real Madrid in yesterday’s draw.

Mendy, who was signed from Lyon in 2019, has become the club’s first-choice option in the left defensive position.

Marcelo, now 32, has lost considerable pace and output over recent years, and will have just one year left on his contract at the end of the season.

However, he may have to miss the second-leg meeting with Chelsea, due to some extraordinary circumstances.

The Brazilian has been called up to partake in polling station duty in the Spanish capital, over the period in which he would otherwise be travelling to London.

Marcelo has of course challenged this decision, but as of yet all arguments have been rebuffed.

Should he and Mendy be unavailable for the tie, Nacho Fernandez may need to be used as a left-back in a back-4 system.
