Pep Guardiola’s league holders were lucky to not slip further away from Arsenal at the weekend as both tasted defeat, with the Etihad clash against Aston Villa offering a possible avenue to gain ground before the two lock horns five days from now

Holding Premier League champions Manchester City can thank their lucky stars last weekend that their 1-0 defeat against Tottenham in north London did not come back to bite them as table-topping Arsenal suffered a surprise defeat against Everton at Goodison Park on Sean Dyche’s managerial debut on Merseyside.

Coming into the weekend, City may look to regain confidence in the title race before their midweek title six-pointer against the Gunners at the Emirates with the knowledge that Arteta’s troops face the tricky task of dealing with Brentford on Saturday, while Guardiola’s men have a somewhat easier fixture on the docket in Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.

Nothing can be taken for granted, however, as Arsenal’s latest result proved once again when it comes to the nature of the Premier League. And though some are beginning to question whether or not Erling Haaland was a luxury signing that is causing dissension on the tactics board or not, City really has no excuse to not take all three points off the visitors on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola will have minimal concerns surrounding the senior City squad going into Sunday’s clash with visiting Aston Villa and Unai Emery, with just England international center-back John Stones the only guaranteed absentee on the personnel list as the defender remains sidelined with a thigh injury.

National team starlet Phil Foden could make his return to the senior squad at the weekend, however, after the City academy graduate missed out on the loss against Tottenham due to illness but is expected to be fully recovered in time. Jack Grealish is slated to remain in the starting birth at left-wing for the moment, but Foden may be in contention to return against Arsenal in midweek.
