Manchester City FC vs Real Madrid: Score prediction & betting tips

Manchester City welcomes Real Madrid to the Etihad on Friday for this UEFA Champions League last 16, second leg match.

Friday will mark the third time Madrid have faced Man City in Manchester. The two previous occasions both ended in stalemate. A similar result here would see the newly-crowned Spanish Champions eliminated from the competition.

City come into the match holding an excellent 1-2 lead from their victory at the Bernebeu back in February.

UEFA Champions League Quarter Final Qualification: Possible Scenarios

A 2-1 win for Real Madrid is the only result that could send the tie into extra-time.

Any victory by a two-goal margin would be enough to send Madrid through after ninety-minutes.

Man City can reach the Quarter Final stage with any win or draw in this tie. They would still reach the QF stage should they lose 0-1 to Madrid due to their away goal advantage.

The side that progresses from this Champions League last sixteen, second leg match will face the winner of Olympique Lyonnais vs Juventus. Lyon take a 1-0 lead from the first leg to Turin on Friday evening.

Manchester City FC vs Real Madrid: What are the odds?

Manchester City have won each of their last seven matches at the Etihad, in all competitions. The score-line of their last defeat here – 0-1 to Man United in the Carabao Cup – would be sufficient to progress to the Quarter Final stage. City start the match as heavy favourites at 7/10.

The two previous visits of Real Madrid to the Etihad both ended in a stalemate. The odds of the two teams canceling each other out on the night once again are 7/2.

Madrid come into the match having won four out of five away matches, in all competitions. They have also won their last two away matches in this competition, back in the group stages. Despite this, they start the match as huge underdogs at 31/10.

Manchester City FC vs Real Madrid: Most likely goalscorers?

City’s joint-top scorers in the Champions League this season are Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, with five goals each.

Sterling has also been the Citizens’ top-scorer in the Premier League this campaign, with twenty-goals. The England international is 15/4 to score the game’s opener on Friday. Or 10/11 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Real Madrid.

Gabriel Jesus looks likely to start given Aguero’s injury. The 23-year old is the joint-favourite of those in sky-blue to get on the scoresheet at 10/11. You can back the Brazilian at 15/4 to grab the game’s opening goal.

Madrid’s joint-top scorers in this competition are Karim Benzema and Rodrygo with four goals apiece this season.

Benzema also finished the season as the second-highest goal-scorer in La Liga. Bettered only by Barcelona’s Lionel Messi with 25-goals to Benzema’s 21. The Frenchman is 11/8 to score against Manchester City at the weekend. Or 11/2 to do so as the game’s first scorer.

Manchester City FC vs Real Madrid: Match preview

The first leg of this match was a fascinating encounter for the neutral.

Rumours of a striker-less formation from Guardiola proved to be true as he named a ‘front two’ of Kevin de Bruyne and Bernardo Silva. Many were suggesting Pep had overthought things one again, as he has done at times in the past for big European games.

City struggled to get a foothold with Madrid absolutely dominating the ball in the early part of the game. The triangle of Varane-Ramos-Casemiro having no problems progressing the ball against the first line of City’s pressure. While in midfield, Modric, Isco and Valverde gained numerical superiority over Rodri and Gundogan.

Despite this, City almost took the lead through Gabriel Jesus on the counter. His shot was equaled by Courtois. While at the other end, Vinicius Junior couldn’t get anything on a rebound with the net gaping. City then had a chance cleared off the line on the stroke of half-time.

It took an hour for Madrid to take the lead, and they were good value for it too. Awful defending by Kyle Walker played a huge part, as he gave the ball away in the build-up to the goal. Vinicius Junior was razor-sharp though to seize the moment and pick out Isco in space in the box to make it 1-0.

Manchester City FC vs Real Madrid: Sterling impact

The game turned on its head with the introduction of Raheem Sterling. Man City finally having a player to stretch Real Madrid vertically.

It was this running in behind which helped City get back into the game. He peeled off into the channel behind Varane. When de Bruyne caught up to support, his cross found Jesus at the back post to head past Courtois.

The goal was not without controversy, as Ramos claimed he was pushed in the back by Jesus. However, VAR decided there wasn’t enough to strike the goal off and it was 1-1.

The equaliser was equally controversial. Carvajal dived in on Sterling who went down in the box. The Madrid appeals that the ball was going out for a goal-kick and that Raheem had gone down easily looking for it were all waved away. Kevin de Bruyne gave City a crucial 1-2 advantage from the resulting spot-kick.

Sergio Ramos’ red card moments before the final whistle compounded matters for the home side. You just can’t rule them out though in this competition.

Manchester City FC team news vs Real Madrid

Leroy Sané will play no part in the competition for Manchester City. The left-winger completed a €45m move to Bayern Munich back in July.

His replacement, Ferran Torres, will also take no part in the match as City cannot register him in their squad. Players must have been already registered and eligible to play for the club at the domestic level since 3rd February to take part in the competition.

Sergio Agüero will likely take no part in the match due to a knee injury. The injury has kept him out of action since mid-June.

Claudio Bravo also missed the last four league games due to a muscular injury. Scott Carson will deputise on the bench as City’s #2 goalkeeper.

Benjamin Mendy will be suspended for this match, due to the accumulation of yellow cards in the competition. Oleksandr Zinchenko looks the most likely to start at left-back in his place.

Real Madrid team news vs Manchester City FC

Sergio Ramos will miss the match following his red card in the first leg. This could be a huge blow to Madrid’s chances. Eder Militão is set to replace him, making only his third start in the competition this season.

Mariano Díaz will miss the tie having tested positive for Coronavirus.

Marcelo is a major doubt as he continues his recovery from a tear in the abductor muscle. He hasn’t featured for Madrid since the first week of July and has missed each of their last four league games. Ferland Mendy will likely start in his place.

Thibaut Courtois was on the bench for Madrid’s final game of the season. Alphonse Areola started in his place. This was likely a move just to give Madrid’s #2 some league minutes before the end of the season. The Belgian international is expected to start between the sticks on Friday.
