Best captain picks for GW1
A key part of playing Fantasy Premier League is choosing your captain for every game week.
The player you select from your starting eleven as your captain will see his points total doubled from that round of fixtures. And if he is not involved in any way, your vice-captain for the week will instead have his normal points total doubled.
Said boost in points can often make or break your gameweek and see you move up or down the FPL ranks a fair bit.
So, picking the best captain each week is a decision you should give considerable thought to. And at 101, we are here to help, picking out the best three captain choices from each week.
Here are our picks for gameweek1.
Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United (12.0m)
Unless you have been living under a rock, you are probably well aware of what a top FPL asset Bruno Fernandes is.
The Portuguese finished 2020/21 as the highest-scoring player on FPL after being awarded 18 goals and 14 assists.
Fernandes then had an underwhelming Euro 2020, but you shouldn’t let that deter you as he has never really been able to replicate his Manchester United/Sporting figures for his country.
And whilst there was talk of United potentially switching formations to use two no.8’s this season – a change which could limit Fernandes’ returns slightly – they do not look set to do so in their opening bout of the campaign as they stuck with their traditional 4-2-3-1 vs Everton over the weekend with Fernandes as the no.10.
It is also worth noting that Fernandes was one of their sharper players during that game and scored a wonderful free-kick.
As for Man United’s opponents this week, they are facing Leeds United. And whilst Marcelo Bielsa and co. did improve defensively in the second half of 2020/21, it is hard to see them keeping a clean sheet at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Mohamed Salah, Liverpool (12.5m)
Like Bruno Fernandes, having Mohamed Salah in your side for the opening few game weeks should be a no-brainer.
The Egyptian was the 3rd-best FPL asset last term, even with Liverpool having a pretty dire season overall.
And now the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are returning to full fitness, we should continue to again see Salah dominate the Premier League.
He would score 22 and assist six in the league last season and with a clash against newly-promoted Norwich this week, he is almost nailed-on to score.
Granted, Norwich do look to have improved defensively somewhat since their last stint in the top-flight, but it is still very hard to see them being able to keep Liverpool at bay this weekend.
Also, not that it should have too much bearing on their upcoming meeting, but Norwich have not beaten Liverpool in any competition since 1994, picking up two draws and 12 losses since then – two of which came in 2019/20 and saw Liverpool win 5-1 over the two games.
Danny Ings, Aston Villa (8.0m)
In all honesty, not going with Salah or Bruno for your captain pick in GW1 is something of a risk.
However, if you do not own the pair or fancy a wildcard option, Danny Ings could be your man.
Ings only arrived from Southampton last week, but was handed his first start and scored his first goal in Villa’s final pre-season meeting over the weekend.
When fit, Ings is one of the deadliest strikers in England. So when Villa face off with newly-promoted Watford at the weekend, there is a good chance he will be on the scoresheet.
