Sevilla vs Espanyol match preview

Sevilla’s mini-unbeaten run is over, so can they bounce back?

On Monday night, los Nervionenses were surprisingly beaten 2-0 by Girona at home.

Before this, José Luis Mendilibar was unbeaten as Sevilla boss, accumulating 13 points from five matches, guiding them away from danger and up to 11th.

In this period, los Hispalenses have also reached the Europa League semi-finals, smashing Manchester United 3-0 a fortnight ago.

This time next week, Sevilla will be in Turin for the first leg of their last four clash with Juventus, seeking to win that competition for a record-extending seventh time.

With almost nothing to play for in La Liga, this game is all about preparing for that massive Europa League tie in seven nights time.

On Sunday, Blanquiazules claimed a vital victory over fellow bottom three dwellers Getafe, with Joselu the only scorer at RCDE Stadium.

This was Luis García’s first victory in charge and ended a sequence of eight winless matches from which Espanyol had yielded just a solitary point.

The Catalan club do remain in the relegation zone, but are now just two points below Valencia and Almería.

Of the clubs still in trouble, Espanyol’s fixture list is by far the hardest, given that they’ve still got: Barcelona (H), Rayo Vallecano (A), Atlético Madrid (H), Valencia (H) and Almería (A).

Those last two could be decisive, but Blanquiazules are in danger of being down before it even gets that far.

Thus, every point counts, so can Espanyol claim a priceless victory at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán?
