Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United match preview

A repeat of the FA Cup Final from 40 years ago, so will this Wembley rematch go the same way?

Back in 1983, these two drew 2-2, with Gordon Smith’s miss, known for the commentary ‘and Smith must score’, the iconic moment, with Man United prevailing 4-0 in a replay five days later.

This time, can Brighton & Hove Albion reach just a second-ever final?

So far, Roberto De Zerbi’s side have scored 13 goals in four FA Cup ties, seeing off Middlesbrough, Liverpool, Stoke and then Grimsby.

Meanwhile, the Seagulls are very much in the race to get into Europe for the first time in the club’s history.

Last weekend, Brighton beat Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, with Danny Welbeck equalising before Julio Enciso lashed home a stunning winner.

Brighton have won both of their last two meetings with Man United, despite only winning three of the club’s 27 encounters beforehand.

So, do the side from the South Coast actually come into this tie as favourites?

Well, Manchester United will be desperately hoping to bounce back after a very disappointing night on Thursday.

Erik ten Hag’s team were dumped out of the Europa League in mid-week, smashed 3-0 by Sevilla at Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, putting in a truly shambolic performance.

The Red Devils have won three successive league games, form that have seen them reclaim third place, but they frankly looked absolutely exhausted in Southern Spain on Thursday.

Who will prevail at Wembley and meet Manchester City in the final on 3 June?

Brighton & Hove Albion team news

Brighton are set to be without both Joël Veltman and Evan Ferguson after both hobbled off at Stamford Bridge.

In Ferguson’s absence, two-time FA Cup winner Danny Welbeck will lead the line against the club he made 142 appearances for.

Meanwhile, Pascal Groß will fill-in for Veltman at right-back, with last week’s match-winner Julio Enciso given a start.

Jason Steele missed the win at Chelsea due to injury, but, if fit, will return in place of Robert Sánchez in goal.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Steele; Groß, Dunk, Webster, Estupiñán; Caicedo, Enciso, Mac Allister, March, Mitoma; Welbeck.

Manchester United team news

Erik ten Hag is very short of centre-back options, with Raphaël Varane and Lisandro Martínez injured while Harry Maguire is suspended, having been booked against West Ham and Fulham in round five and six.

So, Victor Lindelöf’s partner would probably be Luke Shaw, although he appeared to be struggling towards the end of Thursday’s defeat.

Bruno Fernandes missed the trip to Seville suspended so will return, alongside Christian Eriksen and Casemiro.

Marcus Rashford came on at half time in mid-week and he’ll lead the line, with Anthony Martial having hobbled off in the Europa League.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): de Gea; Dalot, Lindelöf, Shaw, Malacia; Casemiro, Eriksen, Fernandes; Antony, Sancho, Rashford.
