Match preview

Two sides in the midst of altogether contrasting spells of form are set to face off upon the latest round of Championship fixtures kicking into gear on Tuesday, October 4th.

Sunderland will act as hosts, with Blackpool their upcoming opponents at the Stadium of Light.

Let’s look first at the recent endeavours of the former.

Sunderland have proven something of a mixed bag to this point in the campaign, with their spot in 8th in England’s 2nd tier at present aptly reflective of as much.

The Black Cats, though, will head into Tuesday’s action hopeful of making it four straight outings without defeat, a run which includes a hugely impressive 3-0 win at Reading, as well as a commendable point secured away to Watford.

Ross Stewart’s ongoing absence marks a hefty blow for Tony Mowbray’s troops, with the attacker having opened the season on fire, en route to eight direct goal contributions in just seven league appearances.

His manager, though, is hopeful that the Scottish international will be back on the pitch before long:

“I think he’ll be on the grass before then [World Cup break] but it’s just about how quickly he gets up to speed and how he feels in himself,” Mowbray explained in a recent update.

“What we wouldn’t do is rush him back, thinking ‘oh we need him for this game’ and it’s one game before that international break.”

Turning attentions towards the upcoming visitors to Tyne & Wear, Blackpool are currently in the midst of an alarming stretch of results.

All told, the Tangerines have secured all three points from just one of their last seven fixtures, and will make the trip to Sunderland on the back of a three-game losing streak.

The most recent of these came this past weekend, when Michael Appleton’s men, in their return to action post-international break, were put to the sword by promotion-chasing Norwich at Bloomfield Road.

Such struggles, in turn, leave Blackpool sitting 19th in the Championship table, just a point clear of the bottom three.

We at 101 therefore predict Tuesday’s Stadium of Light clash to play out true to form, with Sunderland ultimately emerging triumphant.
