Panathinaikos vs Marseille match preview

These two are both giants of the European game, so who will remain on track to return to the Champions League group stages?

In the previous round, Panathinaikos dumped out Dnipro-1, first winning 3-1 in Košice, meaning last Tuesday’s 2-2 draw in Athens was enough to see them advance; Andraž Šporar bagging a brace a week ago.

The Greens have endured a miserable decade or so, with their 20th and most-recent Greek Super League title coming in 2010.

On the continent, Panathinaikos have featured in ten Champions League group stages, the most-recent of which came 13 years ago, with their last UEFA group appearance of any kind coming way back in 2016.

Victory over Dnipro means Ivan Jovanović’s team are guaranteed to change the latter, so can the Greek giants remain on course to end their Champions League exile?

Olympique de Marseille meantime are favourites to win this tie, seeking to qualify for the Champions League group phase in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2011.

If Panathinaikos are going to upset the odds and get through, they’ll feel they simply must win this first leg at Leoforos Alexandras Stadium.

The winners of this tie will take on Braga or TSC Bačka Topola in the UEFA Champions League play-off round.

The losers drop into the UEFA Europa League group stages.
