There were upsets, nerves and drama in the World Cup quarter-finals as France, Argentina, Morocco and Croatia advanced through to the last four in Qatar.
France claimed the most eye-catching victory, seeing off an impressive England side 2-1 in 90 minutes to firmly establish themselves as favourites for the defence of their title but the biggest story came with Morocco’s sensational win over Portugal, who were much fancied after thrashing Switzerland in the round of 16.
That set up what appears to be a fairly one-sided semi-final, but if this tournament is anything to go by then France will find it far from easy against Morocco, while Lionel Messi is still praying for a dream swansong after inspiring Argentina to an ill-tempered win over Netherlands, which had no shortage of drama.
As if that wasn’t enough, Croatia booked a semi-final place for the second World Cup in a row with a dogged win over Brazil, who were desperately close to setting up a dream semi-final meeting with Argentina but ultimately lost on penalties to set up the first semi-final on Tuesday 13 December.
