Morata abuse revealed by his wife after missed penalty in Spain’s Euro 2020 semi-final defeat to Italy

Morata abuse revealed by his wife after missed penalty in Spain’s Euro 2020 semi-final defeat to Italy

Morata’s missed penalty

Despite little expectation, Spain managed to reach the semi-finals of the European Championships, and only narrowly went out at the hands of Italy in a penalty shootout.

La Roja were the more dominant side, and could even have earned themselves a victory if Mikel Oyarzabal could have finished the chances laid on a plate for him on not one but two occasions.

Going behind to a Federico Chiesa strike, Spain substitute Alvaro Morata was on hand to finish a great pass from Dani Olmo to send the game into extra time.

Spain continued to dominate possession and looked dangerous in the final third, but ultimately couldn’t make their control of the match pay and penalties loomed.

Manuel Locatelli saw Unai Simon save his opening strike but Dani Olmo then fired over his spot kick.

The game would ultimately be decided by yet another penalty miss by Morata. He had already missed from 12 yards earlier in the tournament group stages.

The Juventus striker has faced criticism and sadly but unsurprisingly was subjected to vile abuse after his latest slip-up.

Morata’s wife condemns abusers

Morata’s wife has highlighted a number of messages she personally received from disgruntled Spain supporters.

Displaying them on her Instagram story, Alice Campello responded by calling the messages ‘disgraceful and unacceptable.’

Translated, the messages read:

“Your husband has cancer…. your children too”

“Don’t you dare post a photograph of Morata’s goal or I will go to your house and burn you on live Instagram.”

She responded to the messages posting:

‘I’m honestly not suffering with regards to these messages, truthfully. I don’t think it’s a factor of ‘Italians’ but of ignorance. I do, however, think that if it had happened to a more fragile woman, it would have been a problem.’

Many feel that social media companies need to do more to curb the abuse sent on their platforms.

Only recently did clubs take part in a social media blackout, aiming to raise awareness of the abuse sent online.

Yet, nothing has been done so far to combat it effectively.
