Elneny on song for The Pharaohs

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny may be out of sorts in north London, but he still has a big role to play in the national team set up for Egypt and he duly delivered today when he found the back of the net for the Pharaohs.

Elneny finished in cool fashion from 12-yards out after Liverpool star Mohamed Salah found space in the area on the right side of goal before cutting back a pass to the penalty spot before Elneny bent his effort past Angola keeper Hugo Marques.

The strike put Egypt back into proceedings after a poor start saw them 2-0 down against Palancas Negras after 35-minutes, but would eventually storm back to draw level 2-2 and book a place in the final round of CAF World Cup qualifying.

It was the eighth international goal for Elneny in what was his 82nd cap for Egypt in an international career, and his goal earlier today was a throwback to some of his goalscoring efforts seen during a club career that featured some credible strikes despite the nature of his preferred position.

Though he has featured in just 49-minutes of Premier League action this season as his status at Arsenal has plummeted under Mikel Arteta, the goal today was a timely reminder that the Egyptian international still has something to offer the Gunners who are currently light in midfield depth.

Galatasaray looms

But Elneny could soon be on his way out of Arsenal on a permanent basis after the midfielder’s agent claimed he has his heart set on a move to Turkish giants Galatasaray.

William D’Avila revealed that Elneny wishes to finally move on from the club as his status at the Emirates has been made clear by Arteta, with the likes of summer signing Sambi Lokonga and refreshed Hale End product Ainsley Maitland-Niles receiving minutes ahead of him despite the fitness concerns that have surrounded both Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey.

Elneny spent the duration of the 2019-20 season on loan at Besiktas JK to good effect and would hope for similar success should a move come to fruition.
