Pep gets Tuchel’s tactics

Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel will meet in the Champions league final, after guiding their sides past PSG and Real Madrid respectively.

But the pair had a dress rehearsal on Saturday, as Man City and Chelsea faced one another in the league.

Before the match, Guardiola and Tuchel were spotted chatting. When asked about their conversation, the Spaniard joked that the German coach “gave me the tactics for the final of the Champions League.”

Should that prove the case, Guardiola will hope that the tactics employed are different from those which saw the Blues come away from the Etihad with all 3 points, in a 2-1 win.

It will only unnerve the City coach and playing staff, as they aim to secure their first European crown at the end of May.

Guardiola felt the Sky Blues still played well on Saturday, and missed the opportunity to take a commanding lead after Aguero’s comical missed penalty.

“It was a tight game, but in general we played really good,” Guardiola said. “We miss our chance in the last minute of the first half with the penalty. [Chelsea] are a top side and we were playing better. We were in a good position but in the end they score.”

City can now win the Premier League with a win over Newcastle next Friday. Chelsea, on the other hand, have positioned themselves strongly in the race for Champions League qualification.

Tuchel happy with team’s fitness

Since arriving at Chelsea, Thomas Tuchel has rotated his side to find the correct balance in games, and extract the most from his players.

It was therefore no surprise to see the German praise his team’s fitness, after they overcame the Citizens.

“I think the second half was a fantastic response to the last five minutes of the first half where we almost lost it all,” Tuchel said. “With every minute we gained confidence and quality. We got better and better.

“It was a tough battle and once we got the equaliser we never stopped attacking. This tells us we can rely on our fitness which is a fantastic feeling at the end of a season. We can also rely on our team spirit, we keep going.”

A remarkable statistic doing the rounds regarding Tuchel surrounds his record against some of Europe’s top coaches:

He has been able to take the Blues’ squad to the next level of late, and seemingly maximise the investment from last summer.

The target next time out, no matter this season’s result, will surely be securing the Premier League title, aided by further additions in the summer.
