Everton target Arsenal outcast in cut-price January deal

Everton target Arsenal outcast in cut-price January deal

Everton stutter after good start

It was a good start for Rafael Benitez and the Toffees this season, but one which is rapidly unravelling.

Currently 11th in the Premier League, they have picked up just two points from a possible 15 across their last 5 games, with their last win coming over Norwich City in September.

This is partly down to injuries. Yerry Mina, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Andre Gomes have all missed stretches of the season, which has had an affect on an already threadbare squad.

Come January, then, they will surely be looking at reinforcements.

Everton turn attention to Calum Chambers

Now, as per The Sun, Everton will turn their attentions towards Arsenal right-back Calum Chambers, after failing to land team-mate Ainsley Maitland-Niles on deadline day in the summer.

The Toffees were in talks with Maitland-Niles, but ultimately Mikel Arteta and co. decided that they were best served keeping him in north London at least until January.

Maitland-Niles has since gone on to appear for the Gunners in his favoured central-midfield position, impressing in his most recent outing against Watford in the absence of Thomas Partey. Chambers, meanwhile, has not played in the Premier League since Arsenal’s 5-0 defeat to Manchester City, but has appeared in two of three Carabao Cup ties.

With six months left on his contract (as per transfermarkt), and the club yet to take up the option of an additional year, January could well prove the optimal time for Chambers to depart.

Everton, for their part, remain heavily hamstrung by financial fair play rules, that saw them reduced to minimal fee signings in the summer such as Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray. As per the report, a fee of around 5 million pounds could be enough to tempt Arsenal into doing business.

Would the move be a good one for all parties?
