Motherwell vs Dundee United match preview

It’s been a truly miserable season for Dundee United and, while this isn’t quite mathematically the case, they have been all but relegated from the Premiership.

On Wednesday night, the Tangerines were shambolic again, this time smashed 3-0 by relegation-rivals Kilmarnock at Tannadice.

Jim Goodwin’s side have faced both direct-rivals at home in the post-split fixture but have been comprehensively beaten in both, also shipping three against Ross County a fortnight ago.

This means the Arabs remain rooted to the foot of the table, having lost four on the spin.

Thus, the only way Dundee United can survive is if they win, Ross County lose and there’s an eight-goal swing, which isn’t going to happen.

When the Tangerines were last relegated in 2016, it took them four attempts to get out of the Championship, hoping for a much shorter stay in the second-tier this time.

In mid-week, the Well were held to a 1-1 draw by Livingston at the Tony Macaroni Arena, with ten-man Livi equalising late on.

This came after Kevin van Veen broke the deadlock, scoring for the tenth Premiership match in a row.

He’s the first player to achieve this since Mark Viduka, of Celtic, in 2000/01, while the Dutch striker has broken Motherwell’s club-record; Hughie Ferguson scored in nine consecutive games 104 years ago.

Since Stuart Kettlewell took over as manager, the Steelmen have taken 27 points from from 13 fixtures, losing just twice.

This has seen Motherwell move up to seventh, one point clear of Livingston.

The last two meetings between these two clubs have produced away wins, but Motherwell are expected to prevail at Fir Park, thereby confirming United’s relegation.
