Hibernian vs St Mirren match preview

Having enjoyed a big European victory in mid-week, will Hibs kick off the new league campaign with a win?

Nine days ago, Hibernian were on the wrong end of, arguably, the most embarrassing defeat in Scottish football history, beaten 2-1 by Inter Club d’Escaldes at Estadi Comunal d’Andorra la Vella.

Nevertheless, a week later, the Hibees came roaring back to demolish their Andorran opponents 6-1 in Leith.

Martin Boyle was twice on target in the first half, Christian Doidge scored a spectacular overhead kick, Josh Campbell bagged two tap-ins before Élie Youan completed the rout.

Lee Johnson’s side will now face FC Luzern in the Europa Conference League third qualifying round, with the first leg in Edinburgh coming up on Thursday.

Before then, Hibs have this Premiership opener to focus on.

St Mirren meantime ended up in the top half of the top-flight last season for the first time since 1985.

Having guided the Saints into the top six for the first time since the split was introduced, Stephen Robinson’s side will be looking to kick on this time round, potentially challenging for European spots.

The Buddies League Cup campaign got off to a false start, beating by Montrose, but wins over Arbroath, Cowdenbeath and Forfar saw St Mirren take top spot.

Against a fatigued Hibs side, the Saints will fancy their chances of an away win at Easter Road.
