Hibernian vs Heart of Midlothian match preview

Edinburgh derbies are always occasions to savour, but this one is made all the more important by the horrendous form both clubs are enduring right now.

Last weekend, Hearts were beaten 2-0 by St Mirren at Tynecastle, suffering their sixth defeat in seven across all competitions.

So, immediately after the game, Robbie Neilson was sacked as manager, following 232 matches in charge across two spells.

During his second stint as boss, he led Hearts to the Championship title, third place in the Premiership last season and to two Scottish Cup Finals.

However, the board believe that they’re better off without him so Steven Naismith will take charge for the remainder of the season.

Last weekend the Jambos relinquished third spot to Aberdeen, with that position securing guaranteed European group stage football, something they enjoyed earlier this season.

So, this game is crucial as they seek to get their push for third back on track.

Hibernian meanwhile, who kick off just five points below their rivals, are also in the hunt for third, while simultaneously being in danger of slipping out the top six.

Last Sunday, Hibs were beaten 2-1 by Dundee United in a dramatic clash at Tannadice.

Mykola Kukharevych did fire home a spectacular equaliser, but the Tangerines snatched all the points courtesy of a stoppage time penalty.

So, Lee Johnson’s side have spectacularly lost four on the spin, despite accumulating 17 points from their seven outings immediately beforehand.

So, with seven fixtures remaining, Hibs are sixth, four points below St Mirren in the final European spot.

However, they remain in danger of being leapfrogged by both Livingston and Motherwell with just two games to go until the split.

Both Edinburgh derbies in 2023 have resulted in 3-0 Hearts win, but will this clash at Easter Road produce a different outcome?
