West Ham United vs Sheffield United match preview

After a humbling, humiliating defeat last Sunday, how on earth do Sheffield United bounce back from that?

Last time out, the Blades were steamrollered 8-0 by Newcastle at Bramall Lane, the biggest defeat of the club’s 134-year history, and the first time ever they’ve shipped eight in a match.

Surprisingly, Paul Heckingbottom has remained in his job, despite the fact Sheffield United are now rock bottom of the Premier League, having accumulated just one point from six outings thus far.

Given all of that, West Ham United will very much be confident of picking up a victory.

The Hammers are currently seventh, despite coming into this one following back-to-back league defeats, both 3-1, beaten by Manchester City at home and then Liverpool at Anfield last Sunday.

David Moyes’ men did get back to winning ways on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup, with Tomáš Souček the only scorer as they ousted Lincoln City at Sincil Bank.

In 2020/21, West Ham did the league-double over Sheffield United, achieving this for the first time since 1989/90, now targeting three successive league victories in this fixture for the first time since 1935.

Anything other than a win at the Hammers at the London Stadium would be a surprise.

West Ham United team news

David Moyes heavily rotated his XI for Wednesday’s win in Lincoln, with Łukasz Fabiański, Ben Johnson, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Maxwel Cornet and Danny Ings amongst those given starts.

Another player in the mid-week XI was Mohammed Kudus, with the Ghanian set to make his full Premier League debut here, probably displacing Tomáš Souček.

Jarrow Bowen has scored in all four of West Ham’s away matches this season, so can he bag his first of the campaign at the London Stadium Here?

Predicted XI (4-5-1): Areola; Coufal, Zouma, Aguerd, Emerson; Ward-Prowse, Álvarez, Kudus, Paquetá, Bowen; Antonio.

Sheffield United team news

Paul Heckingbottom has had a full week to prepare on the training ground, much-needed time, after they were dumped out by the aforementioned Lincoln in the second round last month.

Following an 8-0 defeat, expect plenty of changes to this XI, including Oli McBurnie, who served his one-match suspension against Newcastle.

Cameron Archer scored in the only goal Sheffield United have not lost this season, so will remain their main goal threat.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Foderingham; Ahmedhodžić, Egan, Basham; Bogle, McAtee, Hamer, Souza, Larouci; Archer, McBurnie.
