Southampton vs Tottenham Hotspur betting tips: Premier League preview, predictions, team news and odds

Match preview

Can Southampton climb off the foot of the table?

On Wednesday night, Rubén Sellés’ side put in another underwhelming performance, this time beaten 2-0 by Brentford at home.

So, despite recent 1-0 wins over Leicester and Chelsea, the Saints have taken a measly ten points from the last 45 available.

At home, Southampton have won just once since August so, unsurprisingly, they remain bottom, albeit a mere two points from safety.

Towards the other end of the standings, despite the general discontent hovering over N17, Tottenham are still fourth, very much in pole place to retain that spot.

Last weekend, Spurs claimed a much-needed victory over Nottingham Forest, prevailing 3-1, with Harry Kane bagging a brace, before Son Heung-min sealed the points.

So, all they have to focus on is the Premier League and, having won four home games on the spin, they occupy the final Champions League spot.

Weirdly, Spurs have only won three league games outside London this season, the most-recent of which came on 29 October, 27 miles west down the South Coast at Bournemouth.

Tottenham have also won just one of their last six visits to St Mary’s, failing to win there with supporters present since December 2016; Claude Puel and Mauricio Pochettino the managers that night.

Will they change that statistic here?

Southampton team news

Kyle Walker-Peters picked up an injury on Wednesday night, so could miss out on a meeting with his former club.

Armel Bella-Kotchap and Jan Bednarek are certainties to start at centre-back, given that they’ve done so in every single match since Rubén Sellés took over.

Theo Walcott could be back in the XI after a bright display at Old Trafford last Sunday; he’s previously scored seven times against Tottenham, the joint-most against any single opponent.

Predicted XI (4-5-1): Bazunu; Maitland-Niles, Bednarek, Bella-Kotchap, Perraud; Lavia, Alcaraz, Ward-Prowse, Walcott, Sulemana; Adams.

Tottenham Hotspur team news

Frasrer Forster and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg will take on their former clubs.

Alongside the latter will be Oliver Skipp, chosen over Pape Matar Sarr, with Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur out for the rest of the season.

At wing-back, both Ivan Perišić and Emerson could return in place of Ben Davies and Pedro Porro respectively.

Between them, Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Richarlison’s have scored 28 times against Southampton, with that number set to increase here.

The Brazilian contributes five to that tally, making the Saints his joint-favourite opponent, so can he finally get his first league goal for Spurs?

Predicted XI (5-2-3): Forster; Emerson, Romero, Dier, Lenlet, Perišić; Højbjerg, Skipp; Son Heung-min, Richarlison, Kane.
