Match preview

Two sides in the thick of the relegation battle are set to lock horns in a Premier League showdown at Goodison Park on Saturday, January 14th.

The clash in question will see Everton act as hosts, in a meeting with bottom-of-the-table Southampton.

First, let’s take a look at the recent endeavours of the former.

Everton, of course, have long seen their woes placed under the microscope, as the position of boss Frank Lampard continues to come under scrutiny.

All told, dating back to late October, the Toffees are in the midst of an eight-game winless streak across all competitions.

Four of their last five in England’s top-flight have culminated in defeat, the most recent of which came in nothing short of alarming fashion early last week.

A home meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion saw goals on the part of Kaoru Mitoma, Evan Ferguson, Solly March and Pascal Groß give rise to an eventual 4-1 final scoreline on Merseyside.

Everton, in turn, remain firmly entrenched in the battle against the drop, sitting in the bottom three, with just 15 points on the board from 18 outings.

And yet, as alluded to above, the Toffees’ upcoming opponents actually find themselves in an even less favourable position as things stand.

Southampton, of course, have endured nothing short of a nightmare season to date.

With the dismissal of long-time boss Ralph Hasenhuttl having failed to give rise to the kind of turnaround in fortunes so desired, the Saints find themselves glued to the foot of the Premier League table.

Since October 29th, all of their last six league fixtures have culminated in defeat.

And yet, bizarrely, Nathan Jones’ troops will head into proceedings at Goodison on Saturday afternoon with confidence brimming in the camp.

This comes with both of Southampton’s last two cup outings having culminated in victory.

After putting Crystal Palace to the sword in the FA Cup last weekend, the Saints subsequently produced the shock of the round on Wednesday, in sending Manchester City packing from the League Cup owing to goals from Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo.

The upcoming visitors to the blue half of Merseyside will no doubt be quietly confident in their chances of making it three wins on the spin as a result.

We at 101, though, view an eventual sharing of the spoils as the most likely outcome upon the final whistle bringing a close to proceedings between Everton and Southampton on Saturday afternoon.
