Can Burnley climb out the relegation zone?

On Sunday, the Premier League’s draw specialists yielded a point from a match again, this time holding West Ham to a goalless game at Turf Moor.

In general, stalemates are holding Sean Dyche’s side back this season but, this time, they were thankful for the draw with Nick Pope making numerous impressive saves.

So, the Clarets have only lost two of their last ten league outings but they’ve still only won once all season, beating Brentford on 30 October.

This means Dyche’s team are two points from safety with a game in hand against Tottenham.

Coincidentally enough, the side they’re trying to catch are Watford which, obviously, makes this a huge game.

This is Burnley’s sixth consecutive season in the top-flight, their longest stay since 1947-1971.

For a club of this size to constantly fight off relegation in the modern era is a fantastic achievement for Dyche and his club.

However, even though everyone says this every year and it never happens, this could finally be the season that Burnley are beaten by the drop.

Well, it may only be December, but this huge relegation six-pointer could be an indicator as to whether or not Burnley will stay up as always.

Will it be a massive night at Turf Moor?

Will Watford win away?

Watford meanwhile will see this as a great opportunity to open up a big gap between themselves and the bottom three.

Claudio Ranieri’s side could’ve been travelling up to Lancashire in a comfortable positition but squandered the opportunity to win on Friday night.

Under the lights at the Brentford Community Stadium, the visitors took the lead mid-way through the first half.

Tom Cleverley’s corner was headed home by Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis, the Nigerian’s seventh Premier League goal of the season.

The visitors looked like holding out for three points but had them snatched away when Brentford equalised six minutes from time.

Then, roared on by the home crowd, the Bees chased a winner and were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time.

William Troost-Ekong the offender, committing a crazy, naive and unnecessary challenge.

The roof then came off the stadium as Brentford won it with the very last kick of the game.

Bees two. Hornets one. The side from Hertfordshire leave the insect derby with nothing.

That made it four successive defeats for Ranieri’s team, following loses against Leicester, Chelsea and Manchester City.

In all, since the Tinkerman has arrived, he’s won just two of nine fixtures, amazingly beating Everton 5-2 and Manchester United 4-1.

This, as mentioned, leaves Watford just one place above the relegation zone and they’ll end the night in the bottom three if they’re beaten.

Burnley won both meetings in 2019/20 and, overall, Watford have only won two of their last 12 encounters with the Clarets.

Troy Deeney scored in both of those victories but, as he now plays for Birmingham City, that won’t be the case this time.

Will Ranieri pull off another memorable victory for Watford?

One of the hallmarks of Burnley under Sean Dyche is that key components of the XI rarely change.

This hasn’t quite been the case to the same extent this season but most of their familiar faces will take to the field.

Goalkeeper Nick Pope has made 46 saves so far this season but has kept just three clean sheets.

In defence, the usual back four will start after James Tarkowski served a ban away to Wolves recently.

In midfield, Jack Cork and Ashley Westwood got the nod on Sunday but Josh Brownhill, who is one booking away from a suspension himself, could return.

Out-wide, Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson continues to get the nod on the right with creator in chief Dwight McNeil on the left.

In attack, Maxwell Cornet has been outstanding since joining from Olympique Lyonnais, scoring five times and providing a further assist.

However, the Côte d’Ivoire international missed the weekend’s match with a slight knock and is a doubt.

If he’s not fit enough to start, Jay Rodriguez is likely to continue as Chris Wood’s partner.

Matěj Vydra is the alternative with Ashley Barnes continuing to struggle for fitness.

Will Burnley claim three vital points?

LONDON, ENGLAND – NOVEMBER 07: Ismaïla Sarr of Watford FC is challenged by Ainsley Maitland-Niles of Arsenal during the Premier League match between Arsenal and Watford at Emirates Stadium on November 07, 2021 in London, England. (Photo by Ryan Pierse/Getty Images)

Watford meanwhile do travel north depleted, missing some key figures.

This includes in goal where Ben Foster is currently injured so Daniel Bachmann, who started all four of Austria’s games at Euro 2020, will deputise.

In defence, there’s no Adam Masina, Nicolas Nkoulou or Francisco Sierralta.

So, given Danny Rose’s very poor form too, right-footed Jeremy Ngakia will continue to cover at left-back with Kiko Femenía on the other side.

In the middle, having given away the decisive penalty at Brentford, William Troost-Ekong could be dropped.

This would see the very experienced Christian Kabasele come in alongside Craig Cathcart.

In midfield, Ozan Tufan is back from injury so is likely to return alongside club captain Moussa Sissoko and Tom Cleverley.

This would see Juraj Kucka drop to the bench, alongside Imran Louza and Ken Sema.

Up front, Watford are without last season’s talisman Ismaïla Sarr who hasn’t played since the Manchester United win, in which he scored, due to injury.

But, they still have plenty of firepower without him.

Cucho Hernández and Josh King are likely to support top-scorer Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis.

He’s already netted seven times in the Premier League since joining from Club Brugge.

João Pedro is the other attacking option and he could be key off the bench in this game that’s very likely to be tight.

Will Watford claim three precious points?
