Betting prediction: Aston Villa 2-1 Brighton

Steven Gerrard is set for his first match in charge at the helm of Aston Villa and will be up against it given the fact that the Villains are in the midst of a five-match losing run. Thankfully for him, Brighton has forgotten how to win football matches and has failed to do so in their last six Premier League fixtures and must now travel to Vill Park without first-choice keeper Robert Sánchez. The attacking football that Gerrard championed at Rangers could really come into play here, especially with the likes of Emi Buendía, Ollie Watkins, Danny Ings, and Leon Bailey under his command.

Aston Villa vs Brighton: Recommended bets

Result/Both Teams to Score: Aston Villa/Yes (4/1 odds)

Aston Villa is on a five-match unbeaten run, but Steven Gerrard’s attacking 4-3-3 could come into play here and tap into a few key assets at his disposal when they clash with Brighton, who have not won in their last six Premier League fixtures. The new manager bump and tactical direction under Gerrard could play a major role here.

To Score Anytime: Leon Bailey (3/1 odds)

One player who is hopeful that the arrival of Gerrard will elevate his selection chance and importance to the side is summer signing Leon Bailey. Villa has yet to see the best of the Jamaican international on a consistent basis, but with the presumed attacking ethos Gerrard will champion, should Bailey start, he could be a real livewire and cause all sorts of trouble for Joël Veltman.

Aston Villa vs Brighton: Match preview

The new manager bump could come into the fore for Aston Villa at Villa Park this weekend as Steven Gerrard takes up his position on the touchline for the first time after replacing Dean Smith.

Gerrard will have a tough task ahead of him though; how to get Villa firing in the final third while plugging a leaky backline that has seen the Villains form this season rest in stark contrast to the credible season they had last term. Currently, on a five-match losing run, Gerrard must get a tune out of this particular musical troop if he is to avoid potentially falling into the drop zone should they lose to Brighton.

Thankfully, almost all of his best-attacking players are fit and available after Danny Ings returned to training, adding his name to a list that already includes summer signings Emi Buendía and Leon Bailey, as well as coveted striker Ollie Watkins. With Brighton struggling of late, this could be the perfect time for his impressive 4-3-3 at Rangers to be unleashed.

And speaking of Brighton, their hot start to the 2021-22 Premier League campaign has stuttered of late after the club has hit a run of form that has not included a win in six league fixtures.

The Seagulls were amongst the top echelon in the league at the start of the campaign but now sit just outside the top five and three points off Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in 5th but still within striking distance of another push if their form corrects itself.

A return to action of starlet Tariq Lamptey could be a vital piece in the cog as well after the England youngster is set to be let loose on the Premier League once more after bursting onto the scene last term.

If the clash between these two sides is an opportune time for Aston Villa to get at a struggling Brighton, then much of the same can be said for a Seagulls side that could – despite the appointment of Steven Gerrard – go for the Villains’ jugular before their new manager rights the wrongs from the final moments of the Dean Smith tenure.

Aston Villa team news vs Brighton

Steven Gerrard is expected to deploy Aston Villa in his preferred 4-3-3 seen at Rangers when he takes charge in his first match since becoming the manager.

The former England international is set to welcome back Ezri Konsa and Danny Ings but will be without a number of assets with Douglas Luiz and Marvelous Nakamba major doubts for selection.

Trézéguet is still out injured as well, while Bertrand Traoré is on the road to recovery but not yet fully fit.

Brighton team news vs Aston Villa

Brighton boss Graham Potter has a quartet of selection concerns coming into the weekend clash with Aston Villa, headlined by the absence of first-choice keeper Robert Sánchez who is serving his suspension for a red card.

Potter will also be without Danny Welbeck, Steven Alzate, and Enock Mwepu as all three are out injured, while Dan Burn’s availability is also a doubt. Aaron Connelly is back available, however.
