Preview for Brentford v Tottenham
Brentford and Tottenham begin their 2026-27 Premier League campaigns with an all-London clash at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday evening.
Both sides enjoyed encouraging pre-seasons, with Tottenham unbeaten across seven matches and Brentford ending their preparations with four successive wins.
Spurs broke their transfer record twice in the space of a few days over the summer, signing Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali for a combined £185m, while further attacking reinforcements could still arrive before the transfer window closes.
Speaking ahead of the match, Roberto De Zerbi said: “It’s not right to speak about players until they are official. Just to say I’m very happy. We have not finished yet in the transfer market. It’s an important part.
“So far, we have had great signings, great players, great behaviour, great spirit and great personality.
“You know better than me in the Premier League you don’t win games with names and big players. There are a lot of examples in the last years in the Premier League.
“You have to deserve to win the game. To deserve to win the game, we have to reach the right level in character, intention and value and in the style of play as well.”
However, Brentford have an impressive record against their London rivals at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The Bees have never lost a Premier League home game against Tottenham since returning to the top flight in 2021, with four of their five meetings at the stadium ending in draws.
Brentford will be hoping their strong home record against London opposition can continue after they went unbeaten in every home Premier League London derby last season.
Team News for Brentford v Tottenham
Tottenham are without Micky van de Ven, who has reportedly not trained during the week and is a major doubt for the opening-day derby.
However, he has been named captain by head coach De Zerbi, who said: “The new captain is Micky van de Ven. Second is Pedro Porro, third Ben Davies, fourth James Maddison and fifth Archie Gray.
“Why five? Because I want as many captains inside the pitch and to be clear in the situation and the position. Every one of them deserves to be captain or in the group of captains.”
That could mean new signings Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke make their full debuts alongside Andrew Robertson, while Destiny Udogie is expected to be fit.
Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert, Dejan Kulusevski and Mohammed Kudus are unavailable through injury.
Dominic Solanke, Mateus Fernandes and James Maddison have returned to training and should be available.
Brentford have fewer concerns, although Sepp van den Berg and Antoni Milambo are both sidelined.
Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade both scored twice in the 7-0 win over Frankfurt, while record signing Mamadou Sangare also found the net and is expected to start in midfield.

Prediction for Brentford v Tottenham
Match Prediction
Tottenham should be more dangerous going forward with several key attackers returning to fitness, but defensive uncertainty could cause problems for De Zerbi’s side.
Brentford’s impressive pre-season form and strong record against Spurs at the Gtech Community Stadium makes them difficult to overlook, particularly after scoring 17 times in their last four friendlies
