BREAKING: World number one Sinner out of the US Open due to knee injury

World number one Jannik Sinner will not play at the US Open due to a knee injury.

The Italian has not played competitive tennis since winning Wimbledon in July and won’t be present at Flushing Meadows when the singles events get underway on August 30.

“Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year,” Sinner said.

“We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.

“I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart.”

Sinner out but Alcaraz returns

Sinner reached the final in New York last year, losing in four sets to great rival Carlos Alcaraz, who yesterday announced he would be fit to play after a lengthy absence due to a wrist problem.

It has been a slightly underwhelming year for Sinner in the majors. He reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open before losing to Novak Djokovic and crashed out of the French Open at the second round stage, losing to Juan Manuel Cerundolo after being two sets and 5-1 up.

Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev will now be expected to battle it out for the US Open title.

Alcaraz won the trophy in Melbourne and Zverez clinched his maiden grand slam crown at Roland Garros.
