FC Barcelona star in negotiations to leave club for free

FC Barcelona could release one one of their strikers for free this summer, it has been reported.

The player in question is Memphis Depay. Depay joined the Spanish powerhouse on a free transfer last summer after his contract with Lyon expired.

He went on to open 2021/22 as Barca’s main striker, scoring four and assisting two in his first eight La Liga outings of the campaign.

However, due to a combination of injury, a change in manager and a busy January for Barcelona, Depay is now very much a fringe option.

The 28-year-old has scored twice in his last five league games of 2021/22, but he struggled to complete 90 minutes in any of those matches.

Instead, La Blaugrana have been relying on Ferran Torres and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for most of their goals.

Barca have also since completed the signing of Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich, pushing Depay even further down the attacking pecking order.

Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona and Memphis Depay’s lawyers are in negotiations to reach an agreement over the Dutchman becoming a free agent.

The striker has just one year left on his current contract, but Barcelona are finding it hard to shift him this summer due to their previous asking price of 20 million euros.

And with La Blaugrana clearly needing to free up as much of their wage bill as possible in order to register their mountain of new players, releasing Depay, who is now the third-choice striker at best, does make sense.

It is not mentioned where the former Lyon will go, only that he will consider offers from top clubs:
