Chelsea boss Frank Lampard coy on Kepa’s future

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has this weekend been drawn on the future of out of favour goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea vs Morecambe

Chelsea are in FA Cup 3rd round action on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues are set to face off against lower-league outfit Morecambe, as they aim to get their season back on track.

Chelsea have been in pretty dire form of late, having managed just one win in their last five league outings – the latest of which saw the Londoners convincingly put to the sword by Manchester City.

As such, Frank Lampard and co. will no doubt be hopeful of a convincing, but above all confidence-boosting win over Morecambe this weekend.

The Pensioners last won the FA Cup in 2018 under Antonio Conte, downing Manchester United in the competition’s final.

Lampard on Kepa

Ahead of Sunday’s game, meanwhile, Frank Lampard recently held his latest pre-match press conference.

During the presser, the Chelsea boss opened up on a number of topics, including goalkeeper Kepa.

The Spaniard endured a nightmare 2019/20 campaign, and also struggled over the early weeks of the current season.

In turn, since the Blues opted to bring in Edouard Mendy during the delayed summer window, Kepa has been largely confined to the bench.

When taking into account the fact that Chelsea splashed out over £70m on Kepa, though, the higher-ups at Stamford Bridge are likely not too pleased watching the Spanish international sitting on the sidelines week after week, devaluing in the process.

So, with the winter transfer window now open, Lampard was today inevitably drawn on Kepa’s future.

The Pensioners boss, though, was keen to keep his cards close to his chest when it comes to a potential January departure for his no.2:

“Well at the moment he’s our player and I think the situation is clear, Edou’s (Edouard Mendy) come in, he’s been playing regularly as the number one for us.

“And when Kepa came in for the Champions League game he did well, and he’s trained really well. His attitude around the place has been brilliant.

“So I won’t be drawn on that one at the moment, he’s our player, we’ll see how January goes. But I don’t want to be alluding to what might or might not be.
