England were beaten by France in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup on Saturday.

France took a first half lead before Harry Kane equalised from the spot after Bukayo Saka was brought down in the box.

Olivier Giroud then made it 2-1 late on. However, Kane had a second penalty kick deep in the second half following Theo Hernandez’s foul on Mason Mount.

On this occasion, Kane skied his penalty and England went on to lose the game.

After Kane’s miss, Sam Matterface went on to state: ‘We needed Gary Lineker but we got Chris Waddle.”

This was referencing Chris Waddle’s missed penalty in the 1990 World Cup.

One fan gained over 11k likes by saying: “They needed Gary Lineker, they got Chris Waddle. Such a poor comment by the awful Sam Matterface. We needed Clive Tyldesley and got Sam Matterface.”

Another fan didn’t hold back on the ITV commentator: “‘We needed Lineker but we got Chris Waddle’ – can you imagine Brian Moore, Barry Davies, John Motson or even Clive Tyldesley coming out with such a cheap line? Actually pathetic.”

Whilst another joked: “A lot will be said, a lot will be written, but you can’t go into a World Cup with Sam Matterface as your lead commentator and expect to win it. That’s the top and bottom of it.”
