Match preview

The Scottish Premiership is back and, for Rangers, it’s the start of a new era.

Mick Beale served as Steven Gerrard’s assistant 193 times during his spell in Glasgow, but now Beale is back as the main man.

The 42 year old took over as Queens Park Rangers’ boss in the summer, winning nine of 22 matches.

But, Beale impressed so much during his time north of the boarder that the Rangers board believe he is the man for them.

Right now, the Light Blues are nine points adrift leaders Celtic, having won just two of their five Premiership games prior to the World Cup break.

This includes a 2-1 defeat at McDiarmid Park and then, in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s last game in charge, a 1-1 draw with St Mirren.

With Celtic visiting for the second Old Firm of the season on 2 January, Beale needs to hit the ground running.

As for Hibernian, they struggled for consistency in the first period of the campaign.

Lee Johnson’s team are currently eighth, just five points clear of danger, while simultaneously five points below third place.

Hibs have actually lost six of their last seven league games, including each of the last three in a row, only beating St Mirren since 8 October.

Given that, some would argue that Johnson is fortunate to still be in the job.

Back in August, when these two met at Easter Road, Josh Campbell’s 94th minute equaliser snatched a 2-2 draw against nine-man Rangers.

Will this festive Thursday night clash at Ibrox be just as dramatic?
