Ajax vs Chelsea betting tips: Champions League match preview & predictions

Ajax vs Chelsea prediction: Ajax 1-1 Chelsea

Both sides come into the match in superb form, which could make for a tight contest on Wednesday.

Chelsea are aiming to win back-to-back Champions League away games for the first time since 2012. The Blues are currently on a five-match winning streak in all competitions.

Ajax are unbeaten in their last six Champions League matches, losing only one of their last 11 in the competition.

Ajax vs Chelsea: Who will win?

Ajax are 5/4 favourites to win the match while Chelsea can be backed at 21/10. The draw is priced at 5/2.

The hosts have kept a clean sheet in each of their last four home Champions League matches. Under 2.5 goals is priced at 6/5.

Quincy Promes has scored eight goals in 14 matches this season, including one in each of Ajax’s Champions League wins. Promes is well-priced at 15/2 to open the scoring and 11/5 to score anytime.

Ajax vs Chelsea Champions League match preview

Matchday 3 in the Champions League Group Stage sees Ajax host 2012 winners Chelsea at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

Ajax lead Group H with two wins from two, while Chelsea are tied with Valencia on three points. Lille host Valencia in the other Group H match later in the evening.

Last season’s semi-finalists have won both their Champions League matches by a 3-0 margin.

Ajax, who are yet to a lose any of their 17 matches this season, sit top of the Dutch Eredivisie on 26 points from 10 games.

Eric ten Hag’s side won 2-1 away at RKC Waalwijk on Saturday, with goals from Dusan Tadic and Quincy Promes. Saturday’s match ended a run of four consecutive clean sheets for the Dutch giants.

Chelsea, meanwhile, moved into the top four following their 1-0 win over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Marcos Alonso scored the only goal of the game. Chelsea could have had a few more but for some brilliant goalkeeping from Martin Dubravka.

After losing their Champions League opener 1-0 at home to Valencia, Frank Lampard’s side won 2-1 at Lille earlier in October. Tammy Abraham and Willian scored for the visitors.

Surprisingly, Wednesday’s match will be the first meeting between these two sides. Ajax have only won one of their last six home matches against English opposition.

Chelsea have only faced Dutch opposition twice before, beating Feyenoord 3-1 home and away in the 1999/2000 Champions League group stage.

Ajax team news vs Chelsea

Erik ten Hag has no fresh injury concerns ahead of Wednesday’s clash.

Nicolas Tagliafico missed Saturday’s game through suspension and should return to the starting line-up. Noussair Mazraoui is likely to give up his spot at left-back.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar started up front on Saturday but the veteran striker may have to settle for a place on the bench. Dusan Tadic is expected to lead the line, which would see David Neres come into the side.

Chelsea team news vs Ajax

Frank Lampard has fielded a back three in both of Chelsea’s Champions League matches, but injuries to Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen mean we should see the same centre-back pairing as Saturday.

Cesar Azpilicueta is expected to be available despite picking up a late knock in Saturday’s win. Fit-again Reece James is an alternate option for Lampard at right-back. The 19-year-old was brought on for the final minute against Newcastle.

Ross Barkley will need to be assessed, however, after turning his ankle before half time. Barkley will likely be replaced by Mateo Kovacic in the starting eleven following the Croatian’s positive performance off the bench on Saturday.

Marcos Alonso’s match-winning performance could be rewarded with another start at left-back, even if Emerson Palmieri manages to recover from his hamstring strain.

N’Golo Kante missed out at the weekend after picking up a groin injury while on international duty with France. The midfielder could make the bench on Wednesday.

Olivier Giroud was an unused substitute at the weekend and may have to settle for a spot on the bench again. Giroud has played more minutes for France this season than he has for Chelsea.

Michy Batshuayi was another unused substitute and will be hoping for some valuable game time.

Christian Pulisic could come in for Willian after his impressive cameo.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is at least a month away from first-team action, while Marco van Ginkel has returned to light training following a long-term knee injury.
