LA Galaxy vs LAFC match preview

Five months later than originally scheduled, it’s time for the 20th instalment of el Tráfico, a rivalry that always produces goals and drama.

To date, the 19 LA derbies have witnessed a whopping 82 goals, including scorelines such as 4-3, 3-3, 5-3, 6-2 and a trio of 3-2s.

The Galaxy boast nine wins, to LAFC’s six, but the newer of the two clubs certainly comes into this latest derby in Pasadena as favourites.

LAFC won the MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield double last season, a rare feat, and are currently second in the Western Conference, although their recent form is not impressive at all.

On Saturday, Steve Cherundolo’s side were beaten again, this time defeated 2-0 by FC Dallas in Frisco.

As a result, Los Angeles FC have lost four of their last six in MLS, also dumped out the U.S. Open Cup, by the Galaxy, and beaten in both legs of the CONCACAF Champions League Final during this period.

Los Angeles Galaxy meanwhile are all the way down in 13th, above only Colorado Rapids, with half the amount of points that their city-rivals have on the board.

LAFC accumulated 17 points from their first seven matches this season, while LA Galaxy are currently on 16 after 19 fixtures.

Greg Vanney’s team are actually unbeaten in five, although the last four of these have been draws, most-recently playing out a 2-2 stalemate with their other fierce rivals San Jose Earthquakes.

Raheem Edwards and Preston Judd on target in front of a huge crowd at Stanford Stadium in Saturday’s California Clásico.

However, the five-times MLS Cup winners have still won just three league games in 2023, so are on course to miss the play-offs again.

The MLS single-game attendance record, that currently stands at 74,479, will be broken here, with an enormous crowd set to witness this huge clash at Rose Bowl.

Despite their patchy recent form, LAFC are likely to take the three points.
