Stockport County vs Salford City match preview

These two Greater Manchester rivals are located a mere 10.1 miles apart, but which set of supporters will be making the pilgrimage down to Wembley for the play-off final on 28 May?

In Saturday night’s first leg, it was Salford City who claimed the narrowest of victories, prevailing 1-0 at Moor Lane.

Stockport came close to a breakthrough when Connor Lemonheigh-Evans’ shot was saved by Alex Cairns, only for Ryan Croasdale to then fire the rebound onto the crossbar.

Mere moments later, Salford went up the other end and scored the evening’s only goal, with Elliot Watt’s cross headed home by centre-forward Matt Smith.

Will they be able to make that advantage count, or will Stockport mount a comeback?

Salford City were playing in the Northern Premier League, the eighth-tier, as recently as 2015 but, backed by wealthy owners, then enjoyed four promotions in just five seasons.

Now though, having won the first leg, Neil Wood’s team are edging just that little bit closer to promotion.

Stockport County meantime are targeting back-to-back promotions, having been crowned National League champions just 12 months ago.

Dave Challinor’s team are the highest-ranked team in these play-offs, having only missed out on automatic promotion on the final day.

Now though, if the Hatters are going to end their 13-year exile from the third-tier, they’ll need to overturn that first leg deficit.

Backed by a sell-out crowd of over 10,000 at Edgeley Park, will Stockport County move one step closer to going up?
