Peterborough United vs Sheffield Wednesday match preview

These two teams may have ended up 19 points apart in the League One table, but both are just a two-legged tie away from reaching Wembley on 29 May.

Sheffield Wednesday are in danger of being rooted in England’s third-tier for a third successive season, with this last the case in the late ‘70s.

12 months ago, the Owls were beaten by Sunderland at this stage, so are well aware just how unpredictable play-offs can be.

This time round, Darren Moore’s men ended the campaign with an impressive 96 points to their name, the club’s highest tally in any division of all-time, even when two-points for a win is accounted for.

Nevertheless, this wasn’t enough, with Plymouth and Ipswich automatically promoted.

The Owls beat Derby 1-0 on Sunday, Michael Smith’s penalty the difference, meaning they come into this campaign following four successive victories.

Given that they are the lowest-ranked team in the play-offs, Peterborough United know they are big underdogs to go up.

The Posh beat Barnsley 2-0 last weekend, Jonson Clarke-Harris and Jack Taylor scoring, a win that saw them snatch sixth spot at Derby’s expense, thereby thankful that Wednesday beat the Rams simultaneously.

This is Darren Ferguson’s fourth spell as Peterborough manager, seeking to take them back into the Championship following relegation last season.

Both league meetings between these two this season produced home wins, 2-0 to Posh in August and 1-0 to the Owls in March.

If Peterborough are going to upset the odds and reach the final, this first leg at London Road feels must win.
