Mallorca vs Rayo Vallecano match preview

After all those around them lost last weekend, can Rayo Vallecano make a last minute surge for European qualification?

A week ago, los Franjirrojos beat Villarreal 2-1 at Vallecas, Raúl de Tomás and Isi Palazón on target, keeping alive their slim hopes of a return to UEFA competition.

So, Rayo kick off in tenth, needing to win to have any chance of snatching Europa Conference League qualification.

If los Vallecas do win, they’ll be hoping Osasuna vs Girona ends in a draw and that Athletic Club fail to win at the Bernabéu simultaneously, both of which are plausible.

Whatever happens, this’ll be Andoni Iraola’s final game in charge of Rayo, leading them to promotion via the play-offs in 2021, the Copa del Rey semi-finals in 2022 and back-to-back respectable finishes in La Liga.

Will his reign end on a high note?

The sole exception are RCD Mallorca, sat 12th with nothing to play for, which makes a nice change given that they only avoided the drop on the final day of last season.

Javier Aguirre has done an excellent job in the Balearic Islands, with los Bermellones particularly strong at home, winning nine of 18 home games so far, losing just four.

Mallorca are unbeaten in seven at Son Moix, winning both of the last two, so could end Rayo’s European dreams with a win in Palma.
