Espanyol vs Almería match preview

For the second time in four seasons, Espanyol have been relegated to the Segunda División.

Rewind to 2019, and there was a pitch invasion at RCDE Stadium, celebrating the club’s seventh-place finish and return to European football.

The following season though, in an empty stadium due to the outbreak of Covid-19, Espanyol suffered a shock relegation, ending their 26-year stay in the Primera División.

Blanquiazules then bounced back straight away, winning the second-tier title, before a steady 14th place finish last time round under the much maligned Vicente Moreno.

This season though has been another disaster in for the Catalan club, sacking Diego Martínez in April but it was too late, with current boss Luis García, who has very little expirence, having no discernible impact.

Espanyol are actually unbeaten in three games, but last Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Valencia confirmed their relegation.

Expect a mutinous atmosphere from the home supporters in Cornellà de Llobregat.

While the Espanyol supporters wallow in their own misery, Almería have it all to play for, needing points to confirm their survival.

Los Rojiblancos could only manage a goalless draw with fellow-strugglers Valladolid last weekend, and have won just once on the road all season, losing 13 of 18 away matches.

Rubi’s team kick off on 40 points, sat 16th, and they’ve already done enough, if Getafe beat Valladolid simultaneously.

If Valladolid draw, Celta de Vigo get a result and Almería lose, then la Unión will be making an immediate return to the Segunda División; a draw could also see them go down if the other two win.

Regardless of results elsewhere, Almería know a win if Catalonia would guarantee their survival.

So, while Espanyol fans will be protesting against the ownership, will Almería claim a massive win at RCDE Stadium?
