Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk says talks over a new contract are “on hold” and says he still has “no idea” if he will still be at Anfield next season.

The Dutch defender was unable to prevent the Reds crashing out of the Champions League last 16 against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday and it is not known whether that loss on Merseyside would be his last in the competition for the club.

Van Dijk’s contract expires this summer and he is yet to agree fresh terms to extend his stay.

Speaking to reporters at Anfield after the penalty shoot-out loss, the 33-year-old said: “I have no idea. I still have no idea at the moment [if I will still be at Liverpool next season].

“Genuinely. I have no idea at the moment. It is not on hold. Nothing is on hold. There’s just… I keep saying the same thing. Listen, there are 10 games to go (this season) and that is my full focus.

“If there is news, you guys will know it. But I don’t even know myself. Everyone knows there are some conversations behind the scenes but that is about it.

“At the moment I don’t even know what will happen next year. If anyone says they do know, they are lying to your face.”

Liverpool’s hopes for a Quadruple under Arne Slot are over but the Anfield club are 15 points clear in the Premier League and can secure the Carabao Cup by beating Newcastle in the final on Sunday.

“There are two big prizes we can still get,” Van Dijk added.

“We are going to give it everything. We have to feel the disappointment tonight but from tomorrow it is about recovery.

“Be ready for a good one. If we bring this intensity in Wembley with our fans, then I am positive. I am always positive. But I am really looking forward to being back out there.”
