Marcus Rashford sent a message of thanks to Aston Villa following the end of his loan spell with the club, with the Manchester Untied forward’s long-term future undecided.

Villa have a £40million option to make Rashford’s move permanent, but as yet there has been no indication that they intend to trigger it.

Having fallen out of favour with Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, Rashford was revitalised after his loan move to Villa Park in January. He scored four goals and laid on five assists before a suffering a hamstring injury that ended his season prematurely in April.

Rashford has also been linked with a move to Barcelona, whose sporting director Deco has expressed admiration for the England international.

But with Rashford set to return to United for the time being, he wrote of his gratitude to Villa, who missed out on Champions League qualification on Sunday following a 2-0 defeat to Amorim’s side.

Rashford wrote: “Just a message of thanks to everyone here at Villa for what has (injury aside) been an incredible few months for me.

“It is a really special club and I appreciated the way Villa fans embraced me with open arms from [my] 1st minute on the pitch.

“Manager, team, and coaching staff have all been brilliant. I know it is a huge disappointment not to have made the Champions League place which everyone worked so hard all season for but I know this club and team will come back stronger.”

Rashford’s contract with United expires at the end of the 2027-28 season. However, with a host of players expected to leave the club following their worst ever Premier League season, Rashford could soon be moving to pastures new.
