Wales vs Armenia match preview

Having made a near-perfect start to European Championship qualifying in March, can Wales claim three more precious points here?

On matchday one, the Dragons snatched the most last-gasp of draws against Croatia, with Nathan Broadhead coming off the bench, for his international debut no less, to poke home a 93rd minute equaliser in Split.

Safe to say this sparked wild celebrations from the traveling contingent of fans at Stadion Poljud.

Importantly, Rob Page’s team were then able to back this up three days later, with Kieffer Moore the only scorer against Latvia in Cardiff.

Wales have qualified for three of the last four major tournaments, most notably reaching the semi-finals at Euro 2016 before ending their 64-year World Cup exile last November.

In the context of this group, with Croatia highly-likely to qualify, Wales’ head-to-head encounters with Türkiye will be decisive, and the pair will clash this forthcoming Monday night in Samsun.

Armenia meantime are yet to get off the mark in Group D, beaten 2-1 by Türkiye in their opener, despite taking an early lead via an own goal in Yerevan.

Oleksandr Petrakov’s team did beat Republic of Ireland last summer, but that remains their only competitive win in 14 outings.

On the road, Armenia’s have won just four times in the last decade, this wins coming in Liechtenstein, Georgia, Greece and Gibraltar.

They welcome Latvia to Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium on Monday, with this undisputedly Armenia’s best chance of getting points on the board in this campaign.

Here, it won’t be straight-forward, but Wales should be able to claim three important points at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Wales team news

There’s no Gareth Bale, Chris Gunter, Jonny Williams or Joe Allen anymore, so Aaron Ramsey will once again lead out his nation.

In goal, neither Danny Ward nor Wayne Hennessey ended their club season’s as number one, so it’ll be interesting to see who Rob Page picks here, with Monday’s match in Türkiye also in mind.

Brennan Johnson missed the March qualifiers injured but is back now, supporting Kieffer Moore in attack.

Armenia team news

Henrikh Mkhitaryan retired from international duty in 2021, so Armenia’s man to watch is Lucas Zelarayán; the Columbus Crew attacking midfielder switched international allegiance from Argentina two years ago.

They’re also very excited about striker Grant-Leon Ranos, who’s current record reads one cap and two goals, bagging a brace on his debut in March, a friendly draw with Cyprus.
