Spain vs Ukraine match preview

Both of these teams know that they have a weekend quarter-final to look forward to, but who will top the group, thereby remaining in București, and who will be traveling to Cluj as runners-up?

Spain were the favourites to win this competition before a ball was kicked and have shown exactly why so far.

La Rojita steamrollered co-hosts Romania 3-0 on opening night, before a far more hard-fought victory over Croatia on Saturday.

The only goal of that clash coming with just 19 seconds on the clock, when Sergio Gómez’s low-cross was turned home by captain Abel Ruiz.

Spain have won three of the last six under-21 European Championships, most-recently doing so in 2019, with Santi Denia’s team looking well-placed to match that achievement on 8 July.

This though will be a stern test, given that Ukraine also have maximum points on the board, so are also assured of advancing.

Then, Ukraine also enjoyed a 1-0 victory on Saturday but, in stark contrast to Spain, their match-winner came very late, with Maksym Braharu’s pull-back provoking an 89th minute own goal to silence Stadionul Steaua.

That goal means the Blue and Yellows will feature in the knockout phase of this tournament for the first time since 2006, getting all the way to the final back then, beaten 3-0 by Holland in Porto.

So, who will clinch top spot with a victory at Stadionul Rapid-Giulești?

Spain’s superior goal difference means a draw would suffice for them.

Spain team news

Both managers, including Santi Denia face a tough dilemma; do you put out your best team, seeking to wrap up top spot, or do you rest everybody, with a quarter-final tie potentially just four days away?

Jon Pacheco and Álex Baena are leading candidates to be left out, given that they’re one booking away from a ban.

Spain made just one change for the win over Croatia, Víctor Gómez displacing Arnau Martínez at right-back, but a few more seem likely here.

Ukraine team news

Vladyslav Vanat will not feature here, having come off the bench and then been sent off in stoppage time on Saturday.

Talisman Mykhailo Mudryk is still yet to play a minute at this tournament which, unless he’s carrying an injury, is peculiar.
