Portugal vs Luxembourg: Head to head statistics

Portugal vs Luxembourg match preview
Portugal have won all 13 meetings with Luxembourg in the 21st century, scoring 48 goals, with a an equally emphatic margin of victory likely in Faro/Loulé.
So far, Euro 2024 qualifying has been simply too easy for Roberto Martínez’s team, winning five out of five so far, without so much as conceding a goal.
On Friday, A Seleção were made to battle but ultimately proved too strong for Slovakia, with Bruno Fernandes’ thunderous shot on the cusp of half time the only goal of the night at Tehelné pole.
Never before having Portugal ended a qualification campaign with maximum points, but they’re halfway to changing that this year.
Now, having run out 6-0 winners at Stade de Luxembourg back in March, the Euro 2016 winners will be hoping for a similar scoreline in the Algarve.
That is actually the only defeat Luxembourg have suffered in this campaign so far, as they aim to qualify for a first-ever major tournament, with this their 37th attempt.
On Friday, the Red Lions made it three wins on the spin, beating Iceland 3-1, with Maxime Chanot converting an early penalty, before Yvandro Borges Sanches and Danel Sinani were both on target later on.
Having also beaten both Liechtenstein and Bosnia in June, Luxembourg have reached the ten-point mark in a qualification campaign for only the second time, previously ending Euro ‘96 qualifying with that tally.
Now though, Luc Holtz’s team are seriously in contention to qualify, kicking off in third, below Slovakia by virtue of goal difference alone.
Luxembourg’s October fixture, Iceland (A) and Slovakia (H), could prove decisive, while any points they pick up here will be viewed as a massive bonus.
Portugal have never lost in 13 outings at Estádio Algarve, winning all six competitive fixtures at this venue, likely to maintain both facts.
Portugal team news
The headline team news is that Cristiano Ronaldo, who’s previously scored 11 times against Luxembourg, will not be adding to that tally, after being shown his third yellow card of the campaign in Bratislava.
Rafael Leão and Bernardo Silva completed the front three for that one, with Gonçalo Ramos set to lead the line in Ronaldo’s absence, while João Félix, Pedro Neto and Diogo Jota are also options.
Diogo Costa is the number one goalkeeper these days, succeeding Rui Patrício, while Rúben Neves is a doubt, having sat out the trip to Slovakia due to injury.
Luxembourg team news
The visitors are without Christopher Martins due to yellow card accumulation.
Star striker Gerson Rodrigues, who’s Luxembourg’s joint-top scorer of all-time, is also out injured, so Alessio Curci could keep his place up front.
