Mexico vs Qatar match preview

Mexico have been simply too strong at the CONCACAF Gold Cup this year, so will that continue in Santa Clara?

Last Sunday, el Tri demolished an admittedly hapless Honduras 4-0 in Houston, with Luis Romo bagging a brace, including breaking the deadlock inside a minute, before Orbelín Pineda and Luis Chávez also netted.

Then, on Wednesday, Jaime Lozano’s side proved too hot for Haiti to handle in Glendale.

Henry Martín and Santiago Giménez both on target in a 3-1 win, the other goal an own goal, both connecting with near-identical, inch-perfect Uriel Antuna crosses.

So, Mexico will feature in next Saturday’s quarter-finals at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, looking for the point here that would rubber stamp top spot.

In stark contrast, this campaign has been an absolute disaster for Qatar, who traveled stateside with high-hopes, having reached the semi-finals of this competition two summers ago.

Three days later, Carlos Queiroz’s team looked set to take the three points against Honduras in Phoenix, going in front just seven minutes in when Tameem Al-Abdullah headed home Mostafa Meshaal’s cross.

However, just when the Asian Champions looked set to hold on, La H equalised in the 96th minute with, what proved to be, the very last kick of the game.

Two extremely late goals proving to be very costly.

As a result, Qatar have just a solitary point to their name, so must win here, and hope Haiti do not win in Charlotte simultaneously, to get through the quarter-finals.

This seems very unlikely, with the enormous contingent of Mexican fans in attendance at Levi’s Stadium set to have another victory to celebrate.

Mexico team news

With six days to go until Mexico’s quarter-final in Dallas, Jaime Lozano may be tempted to rest and rotate just a little bit.

Gerardo Arteaga three-match ban is now over, while César Montes’ four-game suspension will end after this match.

For now, Edson Álvarez will continue to deputise at centre-back, alongside Johan Vásquez.

Henry Martín could continue to lead the line, chosen over Santiago Gimenez.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Ochoa; Sánchez, Álvarez, Vásquez, Arteaga; Luis Romo, Chávez, Sánchez; Pineda, Antuna, Martín.

Qatar team news

Yusuf Abdurisag’s red card, shown to him in the 98th minute on Thursday, means he is suspended.

So Almoez Ali, who won the golden boot at the Gold Cup in 2021, could come in to partner Mohammed Muntari in attack.

Predicted XI (5-3-2): Barsham; Al-Rawi, Salman, Suhail, Ahmed, Ahmed; Abdulsallam, Fatehi, Meshaal; Asad, Muntari.
